@CHEWBACCA_Ewok Yes, you can still use the Wii U eShop. For reference, the original Wii eShop is only now closing, so the Wii U one should be open for a few years still at least.
That said, the Wii U is no longer being updated in any fashion, but that isn't required for the eShop to function. New games are even still occasionally added there.
@CHEWBACCA_Ewok They weren't going to have Miiverse on the Switch so I guess shutting it down would save them money, but as @faint said you won't be missing much.
There is a notification when you load a game saying that Miiverse isn't available but the game still works, even online games like MK8 and Splatoon.
@CHEWBACCA_Ewok Don't mind the other responses, Miiverse was great and unfortunately you are missing something. I used it to chat with friends, post images, ask questions and for Super Mario Maker is was brilliant(they ruined a lot of that game's appeal by closing Miiverse). Other games used it too to a lesser extent. The art on Miiverse was amazing.
They removed TVii along time ago as well, or in Europe we never got it in the first place, just an icon that did nothing until it was deleted by Nintendo. You should still buy a Wii U though, everything else works.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE They might miss something, but it's not something that will have a significant effect on gameplay - which is what really matters.
There are plenty of other places online to talk about games, post art or find a bf/gf (if you were 10-12 years old, nobody older seemed to try that..).
If you can find a Wii U at a good price then sure, buy it and you'll get hundreds of hours out of it. But it might be worth buying a Switch instead as most of the best titles from Wii U (Both retail and eShop) are moving to Switch already. It's worth spending a little more to future-proof yourself for the coming years.
*I just checked Wii U console and game prices on Amazon and it actually made me feel a little sad, which is surprising because I usually don't feel sad about things that are even important. It's just quite sad to see how obvious it is that they're trying to sell of the remaining stick and then it will just fade into obscurity....
Wii U was better than what people remember it for.
@CHEWBACCA_Ewok Yes, for some time. You'll only be able to redownload old games however, not purchase new ones. Eventually it'll be shut down entirely though.
