Topic: Copying Wii save data from SD card?

Hi guys! New poster here who is seriously considering buying a Wii U since the announcement of the New Super Mario Bros U/Luigi U bundle. I just need to keep an eye out for any possible Black Friday deals and I'm in there! I just have one very important question about transferring my Wii saves.

I actually planned on buying a Wii U last year, however due to the lack of games I decided to hold off but not before selling my Wii on eBay. Before I did that I made sure to copy my Wii saves onto an SDCard. Since I had my Wii hacked I was also able to copy saves that the WIi normally wouldn't have allowed, such as Tatsunoku vs Capcom and Mario Kart. My question is twofold:
1 - Would I be able to copy my Wii saves from my SDCard onto a new WIi U?
2 - Is there a way to copy the Wii saves that I copied through the hack/homebrew from my SDCard into a new Wii U? For instance, would that require hack/homebrew for the Wii U?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

As I understand the transfer process, you have to have BOTH consoles in front of you in order to do the transfer. An app has to be downloaded on both consoles. If all you have is the SD card from the old Wii, I don't think you can do it.

As for the stuff that you got through Homebrew, that would not transfer over.

That sucks. And it's what I suspected after scouring the internet.

If I borrow a friend's Wii, would I be able to copy my save files onto the Wii then run the transfer process?

Yeah, that should work.

SD to Wii instructions: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/ht_system....

Then you could do the Wii U system transfer: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/system_sy...

Cool. Thanks for the link. One final question. If I do transfer my save files from a friend's Wii, will that copy over my friend' Wii profile/Mii/network ID?

You can't have more than one save file for each game.

The network ID is part of the Wii U and is not used by the Wii mode in any way

My friend's Wii doesn't have save files for the games in question, so I should be OK in that regard.

As far as i know its that the whole safe files from the wii and the miis from the wii will be transfered to the wii u. But u cant choose which will and which will not. Maybe if u take the safe files from ur friend on another SD card and then put urs on the wii then do the transfer but u will still loose the miis.
Also im not sure if u can or cannot put them on the other SD card. So i would be carefull and look around the internet about this case more

To be honest I really don't care about the Mii's. I never had the time to be such an active Wii user that the Mii's were important. All I care about is keeping my save data, especially for games that I still need to beat.

Nevertheless I would prefer not to have my friend's Mii data. Though I can always just delete them I suppose.

if I remember well(on the Wii side, never had WiiU) you can transfer save files of any game that's not online to the SD card(but don't know if there are some games with online features that allow it since the ones I had couldn't)

If you don't care about the Miis and you don't have any downloaded games, you can just transfer most of your save data to the SD card and then copy it to the Wii U just like you would with a regular Wii. You'll have to pop the game in the Wii U and start it up first, though. For some reason, the Wii had this weird requirement that the game be played before a save file could be transferred, and this is still present in the virtualized version on the Wii U.

That being said, if you've modded your Wii, the Wii U might not like those save files--especially the ones that you're normally unable to transfer off the Wii (ie. those with save data).

I myself have still not done a complete transfer, but instead have just transferred the save files I cared to play on my Wii U such as Skyward Sword and New Play Control: Pikmin 2 (as the disc drive on my Wii is broken). Eventually, I will do a full transfer...I just haven't found the need to yet.

EDIT: I guess I didn't read your whole post originally. I just realized you don't actually have your Wii anymore, so you can't do a full transfer if you even wanted to. Anyway, what I said still stands. I'd suggest trying to transfer the save files to your friend's Wii. If they work without a hitch, then I'm 99.99% sure they will work on the Wii U as well. As stated previously, I only worry about the files you grabbed using the modded tools--those might not take.

I think there is a workaround to this. If you play a Wii disc on your Wii U, it will create a new save file for that game. From there, I think you can pop in your SD card and overwrite the virgin save file with your current one. Please research this first, because I have not tried it myself.

I've done this and was trying to explain that in my post. Sorry if I wasn't clear!

I don't know if you can overwrite the save file automatically by copying from the SD card, but at the very least if you delete the file first and then copy from the old file, then that will work.

Yeah, you don't need to use the transfer process. You don't even need to play the games on Wii U, but you do need the games. Here's what you do:

1) Go to Wii Menu on your Wii U.
2) Put in the Wii disc of the game that you have a save file for.
3) Wait until the logo of the game shows up. You don't have to start it up, you can remove the disc now.
4) Repeat for all games that you want to transfer saves for.
5) Now go to the data transfer menu in Wii mode and transfer the saves you want from the SD card.

Some "hard-locked" saves like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom might require you to install a Wii homebrew channel on the Wii U's Wii Menu. You can find out by yourself by testing whether you can transfer the save file directly.

Just remember that using the Wii transfer software will delete everything on the Wii.
