The "button mashy" aspects of Bayonetta 2 will transform in "style" as the game goes on if it's anything like The Wonderful 101.

The Wonderful 101 relied on timing, and choosing the right "tool" for the job with unite morphs on both offense and defense.

mindless button mashing is different from button mashing as far as I am concerned.

Button mashing is anything that relies on mashing buttons. (i.e that Megaton thing.)

The same thing could have been achieved without requiring it. (Instead of mashing the button loads in a short space of time instead they could have required pressing it less times but with perfect timing).

Exactly my point. I played the games on a regular difficulty, my first time through, then I played on God Mode, because you have to unlock it. Even though I knew the game by that point, I still had to learn how to dodge better, use attacks better, and so on.
