Shouldn't it be the other way around? Don't get me wrong, I applaud Yoshi's Woolly World and Kirby's Rainbow Curse for really trying to do something innovative with the genre, and the 3DS's RPG library is stunning, but 2D Platformers really can't do much with the Wii U's additional power, while 3D RPGs can take advantage of the Wii U to have larger worlds, stronger worldbuilding, and flashier animations.
And this is coming from Nintendo's 1st party studios, not 3rd parties. S.T.E.A.M, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, are all on 3DS, while Yoshi, Kirby, DK, and 2D Mario are all on Wii U

well, when you say it like this.....
I feel that picking the 3DS and not the WiiU was the right choice! XD

JRPGs are not system sellers. They haven't been since Final Fantasy VII. Nintendo needs to build an install base first, then think about putting JRPGs on its console.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

The only 2D Platformer that has sold many systems for Nintendo is the NSMB series...
Games that take advantage of the hardware to deliver new experiences are what sells systems.

So you would think, but Wonderful 101 and ZombiU flopped hard.
And yes, 2D Mario games are traditional system sellers. 2D platformers also have a fairly high attachment rate, even if they don't move consoles.

I'd argue that ZombiU flopped because, despite using the hardware, reception to the gameplay was mixed. Wonderful 101 just had horrible marketing behind it.
But even if you are right, I'd say RPGs do a decent job of pulling hardcore gamers in, as they tend to be deep and lengthy experiences worth a high price of purchase.
Aren't Ninty's system sellers Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Zelda, Pokemon and Mario (both 2d/3d) platformers whilst everything else just supports the consoles.

Even with 2D platformers, the Wii U can do much, with beautiful HD graphics and 5.1 sound. And I like playing 2D platformers on a big screen. Furthermore, the next platformer arriving is a 3D platformer.
Kirby (HAL), the upcoming Yoshi (Good-Feel) and DK (Retro) are from 2nd party studios, not from an EAD.

HAL and Retro are owned by Nintendo, so they are 1st party. Yoshi's 2nd party since it's made by a company that has an exclusive contract with Nintendo but isn't owned by them.
I like playing with beautiful HD graphics and 5.1 sound too, but I'd much rather have an RPG that does that than a platformer. That's not to say an HD platformer is bad, and Yoshi's Woolly World and Kirby's Rainbow Curse clearly take advantage of the technology to create beautiful aesthetics. But compare that to what a game like Ni No Kuni does with it's unique aesthetic.

Honestly, if Nintendo wants mass appeal, JRPGs are just one step in that direction. They'll need a lot more than just Performers and JRPGs to sell this thing. I, for one, would really love to see Nintendo tackle a WRPG. Its way out of their comfort zone and might actually take to long to develop for the Wii U,, but can you imagine what kind of response they'd receive for showing something on par with Skyrim our Dark Souls? And for all we know, that may be what Zelda U is aiming for. Well have to wait and see.

That's part of why Nintendo needs to make more western studios/acquisitions. Though it would be really interesting to see Nintendo work with From Software. They have worked together in the past on Lost Kingdom for the GC.

I'm not going to buy the Wii U for games that could be achieved on 3DS. Zelda looks like it may buck that trend.
hahaha no not one wiiu game could be played on the 3ds without massive downgrading and content cutting. lolololol. i have both. and i play both toooo death. you are wrong good sir.

except MH3U, that was achieved in the 3DS and the only real downgrades are the graphics(that still look sweet in the 3DS) and the lack of online.

The Wii U has too many platformers. I said this last year and it still holds true. The console needs more variety of Nintendo wants people to pick it up. Mario and Dk are good games but ppl have played previous installments of those games over and over.

You'd be surprised at how many people bought a PS3 wit the intentions of playing KH3 and Versus XIII
Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

I noticed this trend a while ago, but just never paid it much mind.
I don't think Nintendo realized how long HD games can take to make. Since Nintendo wasn't experienced with HD games I always assumed that sticking with platformers for a while was a safe way for them to get used to it before jumping into 3D games. That was always my assumption.
Also, I agree with @MAN1AC. I was one of those people who bought a PS3 thinking KH3 would come out eventually. It never did. Now that it's been announced to be in the works on PS4, I realize that I just don't care about the series anymore. It's been so long and I have no idea where the story is anymore after the many spin-off releases on handhelds and whatnot.
