Topic: About to get a Wii U - any hidden gems?

I decided that since the Switch is a bit unaffordable to me at the moment that I would get a Wii U instead. The systems and games are so cheap second hand that I can have a lot of fun for relatively little cash. The games I'm most excited about playing are the major Nintendo franchises - Mario 3D World, Mario Kart, Yoshi's Wooly World, Zelda (Wind Waker 'cos I never had a gamecube so I missed that one, and Breath of the Wild because it looks beautiful).

But I'm also interested in any hidden gems the system has. Is there such a thing as a hidden gem on this system with its relatively small library of games. I expect there must be! So please give me some pointers about what I should be on the lookout for at my local second-hand game store

Honestly I'd suggest just getting a Switch.

However if you do get a Wii U I'd recommend going through the Virtual Console for some classic games like Earthbound, Pokémon Snap, Metroid Prime, Sin and Punishment, Punch Out etc.

Top games that weren't ported or sequelized (atm) on the Wii U are Star Fox Guard (I loved this game!), Paper Mario Color Splash, Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water, Nes Remix, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101 and Nintendo Land. There were some really good indie games like Mighty Switch Force and Armillo too.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is really good, heavily under-appreciated, not sure I'd call it a hidden gem though.

Lego City Undercover is a really fun game. It's a bit like Grand Theft Auto minus the gratuitous violence. It's since been ported to other consoles including Switch but the Wii U version has some clever Gamepad integration so I highly recommend picking that up.

If you don't already have it on other platforms, I recommend Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. An excellent kart racing game with a solid amount of single-player content, and gameplay-wise it rivals Mario Kart IMO.

Surprised noone already mentioned it, but Tokyo Mirage Session is a great JRPG exclusive to the Wii U.

Also, if you can find a copy of Rodea the Sky Soldier with the Wii version included that's definitely an hidden gem. Sure it is technically a Wii game, but since you can only get it with the bad Wii U port I would still consider it a very well hidden Wii U gem.

Mass Effect 3: Special Edition, it's a fairly meaty game and you can get it cheap as chips now. I'd also give Darksiders 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Batman: Arkham City and Need for Speed: Most Wanted U a shout.

No point listing first party games as they're all good apart from the Animal Crossing and Mario Tennis game.

There were more first party duds than that with Star Fox Zero and Game & Wario coming to mind and Wii Sports/Fit were step backs from the Wii versions.
