The Sega Mega Drive has been named the most popular retro games console, narrowly beating the Nintendo 64 in classic console combat.
Gaming site Playr2.com asked 1,411 British button-bashers aged 18 or over to name their favourite vintage videogame console. 61 per cent of those who replied named the Sega Mega Drive as their favourite.
Looks like Sonic the Hedgehog beats GoldenEye. The Mega Drive launched in Japan in late 1988, arriving in the US in the 1989 — where it was known as the Sega Genesis — and finally landing in Blighty in 1990. It survived in Europe until 1998, in which time 8 million Mega Drives were sold.
But gamers were allowed to choose more than one console in the new survey, and the Nintendo 64 was a very close second. The N64 was a 64-bit console launched in 1996 in Japan and early 1997 in Europe. Despite being one of the last cartridge-based consoles when its rivals were switching to CDs, it's still held in high regard by 58 per cent of gamers.
The N64 is followed closely by the Atari 2600 and original PlayStation, both winning approval from more than half of those who replied.
Nintendo won the hearts of many a gamer with the Game Boy, SNES and NES, in fifth, sixth and seventh places. The Sega Game Gear and Neo-Geo are in eighth and ninth, while the SEGA Master System rounds out the top ten with just over a quarter of the vote.
Video gaming is certainly coming of age, with this year marking the 30th birthday of the Commodore 64, fondly remembered by gamers of a certain age.
Don't believe Cnet's lies... SNES is the best retro console in my opinion.
the SNES had so many great games- legend of zelda: a link to the past, super mario world, super metroid, mother 3, f-zero, donkey kong country, illusion of gaia, killer instinct to name but many. a great system.
oh and it was playr2, who carried out this poll, rather than CNET.
the SEGA megadrive was one of SEGA'S fewest success stories in the hardware market. there was that whole super nintendo vrs megadrive/genesis rivalry going on and it was about which one to side with. but for many console gamer fans, i think many of us appreciate the strengths and advantages of both of them.
the megadrive had sonic, streets of rage, kid chameleon, toe jam and earl, comix zone, gunstar heroes. for me personally, i much prefer the megadrive's games over say the ps1, x-box.
Yep Megadrive is awesome, it's official. It had Thunderforce IV and Streets of Rage. Nuff said! Also The Master System and Megadrive were far more popular here in Blighty than Nintendo consoles so this is probably why this is the result.I'm sure in the good ol' USofA the SNES would top the list. I wonder what Japan's favorite would be??

i'm guessing it's the famicom, the japanese N.E.S. but then again, it might be PS1. i might be wrong here but i don't think SEGA consoles were that popular in japan, especially compared to nintendo's.
Think the Saturn was the most popular Sega console in Japan despite performing way below expectations elsewhere, Virtua Fighter in particular was huge there.

according to this wikipedia page, the saturn sold 9.5 million worldwide; with 6 million in japan. i think that by the time the PS1 and N64's hardware and software sales surpassed the saturn, the saturn never managed to gain ground with those 2 consoles.
it was.... all right. the dreamcast did much better than the saturn, and arguably had the better games too.
