Okay, so I’m trying to get into the Mega Man games, but all these sub-series are kinda confusing me. Would someone be as kind as to list all of the different Mega Man series (not every game, just the series) chronologically while stating roughly around what time the series takes place? Also could you tell me which Mega Man stars in which series? There’s too many Mega Men to keep track of.
Oh, and please try to spoil as little as possible. Thanks

Classic MegaMan series -> MegaMan X series -> MegaMan Zero series -> MegaMan ZX series

This is the main line of series. Each one takes place some 100 years after the last, and they are only loosely connected, so playing them out of order isn't much of a problem

Apart from that, you have the MegaMan RPGs which aren't related (story wise, at least) to the rest of the series. They start in the Battle Network series, and continues in the Starforce series. These two series are also sepatated by some 100 years.

Finally, you have the Legends series. I havent played them, but as far as I know, they don't have any chronological connections to any other series.

It might seem like a lot, but at least it's easier than coming up with a Zelda timeline.

Thanks
But how about all the different Mega Man characters? Are they related in any important way?
(Aside from all being named MegaMan I mean)

Characters in the MegaMan games generally only star in one series, so any major characters won't have interactions through the different series. The only real exception to this rule is with Zero, who is plays an integral role in both the X and Zero series.

Oh, okay.
Thanks again

People actually care about the story in the Mega Man games? That's....strange.

Knowing the order of the games and actually following the story are two seperate beasts. One you can figure out with a quick look to Wikipedia, the other...yikes.

They take place some centuries after the ZX series.

So basically, the chronology is Original -> X -> Zero -> ZX -> Legends
There's also the alternate dimension series, with Battle Network -> Star Force
