I am amazed that my Legend of Zelda cartridge still holds saves, but the battery will have to give out sometime. Is it possible to replace the batteries, and if so is it difficult/expensive?

It's a good question though. A related one is what people will do when their old system memory cards stop working (the Gamecube seems to use a standard SD card in a bespoke case, so possibly you could hack-up your own)?
Yeah Its definitely possible. I ended up buying a couple of fake GBA cartridges of E-bay(I thought they were genuine),anyway they worked but i could not save so I bought a couple of replacement batteries of e-bay and the special screwdriver, though you can make your own, popped em in and hey presto! I could save. I don't see why it wouldn't work for other types of cartridge providing you can get the batteries. GOOGLE is great for stuff like this, there's a few guides for stuff like this, fixing controllers ain't hard either.
Yea I did it with my gb Donkey Kong (the newer bigger one) though the old battery was stuck to a metal piece that I had to pry off. Saves now. I did something to either hold in place or push it down (Probably the later. Been awhile).
I change my Super NES cart batteries all the time. If you're halfway decent with a soldering iron, it's fairly easy. I've yet to take on the NES carts, but I don't play them as much as I used to anyway.
