Topic: The future of Console Generations

I am just wondering what people are thinking future console generations will be like.

In the closer future I would like to see Nintendo get on a different generational cycle than Sony and Microsoft. If console generations are lasting 8 years now then every 4 years there could be a new console. 4 years Nintendo's new console, 4 year then Sony & Microsoft's new console, 4 years then Nintendo's new console. This would allow Nintendo to cheaply use similar technology to Microsoft and Sony to try to get 3rd Party support while later in the systems life delivering the more unique games. It could still benefit from 3rd Party later in its life as the cheap older console with still a large and growing install base. Microsoft & Sony would still be on the "cutting edge" of console technology to deliver their experiences and with nintendo's console releasing during the halfway point for their system but without much more powerful hardware they wouldn't have to worry cause they have a growing install base with a large library. It could be good for the industry to have these half generation jumps in some ways. But that is just my idea.

Or streaming games could be the future and "console generations" as we know them could be completely different.

But that is just what I think (kinda just wanted to rant lol) but what do you think could happen or what would you like to happen?

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

there is no future for consoles, in the future of videogames there will be only the PC

Hard to predict the specifics. I think a few key factors that will play a huge role (including handhelds under the banner of 'consoles'):

-Whether Moore's Law continues at the same rate.
-Whether Japan continues to abandon home consoles.
-Whether Sony even bother carrying on in the handheld market.
-What happens between the imbalance between the cost of AAA games VS the amount of money they make (those haven't increased at the same rate)

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

I hope. Nintendo can't do handhelds and consoles at the same time. 2011, 2012, 2013 had virtually no Wii/Wii U games, but plenty of 3DS games, and 2014 and 2015 is and will have a lot of Wii U games but hardly any 3DS games.

It's hard to be certain but I do believe that there is a distinct possibility that literally all gaming could be streaming services or something like it someday, thus making consoles irrelevant.

If that does happen, I think Nintendo would be the last to join it, but it would probably happen and hardware would be focused on controllers and other items like it rather than consoles or handhelds.

Of course I'm also expecting someday to have Disney Sony to battle with Google Nintendo and Applesoft Amazon for rule over all our governments at this rate.

Keep telling yourself that buddy. The day console dies is the day gaming dies. It is as simple as that. Look as much as I love PC gaming, PC gaming is not the future. It may become the leading tech platform, but gaming itself will never survive on PC alone.

@kkslider5552000 Stream gaming is definitely the future, but I don't see that happening in another 30 years to be honest. We simply do not have the infrastructure to make this happen. But that doesn't make the console irrelevant though. The consoles will just transform from a hardware box to a streaming box.

The longer a generation lasts, the more unusual games it gets, the more i like it.

Nintendo Published 3DS software[1]:

  • 2011 - 11 games
  • 2012 - 10 games
  • 2013 - 11 games
  • 2014 - 13 games

2015 isn't over yet, a lot can happen. Handheld games are usually announced closer to their release relative to home console games.

Nintendo Published (and Planned) Wii U software (NA)[1]:

  • 2012 - 4
  • 2013 - 13
  • 2014 - 10
  • 2015 - 12 (Planned)

The Wii U was released very late in 2012 (late November / early December), as opposed to the early release of the 3DS (March 2011), hence why the Wii U titles for 2012 seem so barren compared to the launch titles for the 3DS.

I think this proves that Nintendo can handle their own games very well. It's impossible to say exactly how many games both systems will receive in 2015, until that year is over; any comments on the amount of upcoming games will be a mere conjecture.

well Nintendo are going to enter the health/fitness' market - with this 'quality of life' device - this weird trend now where people want technology that tells them all about their body. We wont rest until that microchip is inside us telling us our fibre is low, eh? Anyways...

I think the 'Fusion' and this fitness tech are related. I think Nintendo can become a powerful brand to a lot more people - non-gamers - because they have always conveyed this sense of care for people and intelligence in how to deliver to their fans, a trusted brand. If they do things right they could become successful in this market.

You can see they have an idea where all your devices are Nintendo, they all talk to each other and they're all a part of your life. I can imagine some Wii Balance Board-esque buddy that you interact with every day - you exersize in the morning, Nintendo tracks it. You go to work and have a stressful day, Nintendo knows about it. You go home and sync your device and it recommends you chill out and play some Mario Kart to let off some steam. If you're an unemployed bum, maybe it'll remind you to work out or recommend you do some Wii Fit.

I think there will always be stand-alone video game consoles, but they would've grown, as they did from "gaming machines'' to ''entertainment hubs''. As usual I think we'll see Nintendo lead the way with this technology before the non-gaming copycats do it - I know Microsoft are well into this fitness market too, so it'll be a case of tweaking Nintendo's ideas again for them I think.
