Topic: Should all future game controllers have mics?

For Mario Kart 8, to chat with friends, you hold down the (-) button and speak through the Wii U gamepad's microphone. While I'm not a fan of Pre-game, Friend Lobby only voice chat, the fact that you can use the gamepads mic for voice chat is a great concept IMO, as it gives players who don't have a headset a chance to talk. The DS did this years ago though with games like Metroid Prime Hunters. I think it makes voice chatting more accessable and eliminates the requirement for a headset as you can just use your headphones to block out any unwanted listeners.

I've been thinking, should all future game controllers have a built in microphone for stuff like this?

If it doesn't increase the price too much i wouldn't mind. If it does it better be a big system-wide feature that can (optionally) be used with a huge number of games on the system.
I'd like having the option to switch it on permanently though (so not having to hold down a button to keep it switched on). That's really great for co-op games you play with people you know very well. It would be great being able to play games like NSMBU, NSLU and others in co-op online.
I don't get why you can't talk to your friends during the whole game in more games on Ninty platforms.
I'd also love online co-op for all VC games that had these options in a local form. It was a great experience to play Super Mario World with an internet friend (via emulation) and just talk about the good old times while playing it.

No, not really. But proper headset support would be cool.
The problem with included mics is that people (especially kids) can get on everyones nerves by yelling or making dumb sounds without any roadblocks. But people who actually value teamspeak and stuff most likely already have a headset. So, leaving the mics out of controllers would actually be beneficial.
But in case of the WiiU, the mic is part of the actual controls (think the fan platforms in Super Mario 3D World). Being forced to buy a microphone just to play the game would be seriously unfair.

I'm not saying headsets should go away, but include mics on the controllers so that everyone without a headset at least has the option for voice chat. It could make online gaming more mass market instead of being dominated by little kids or hardcore gamers.

Yes they should but not for 'blow on the mic' control options

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

I disagree. In the scenario i've depicted above none of us would've been willing to buy a headset just for that.

Best to have it and not need it then need it and not have it.

Also it gives developers one extra tool to be creative with.

As long as I can mute the other person when they are yelling, cussing and being a jackenape sure why not.

Because not every developer is that intelligent. Honestly, I don't even like that the Wii U's controller has a Mic, last time I played online I had to use it and it hurt more than helped. :/

Shouldn't you be able to mute someone on a system level at this point.

Typically this is why I only player team deathmatch or 1v1.

It would be a cool feature, as long as games keep it to team chat features in multiplayer and stuff where it makes sense in general. Nothing like the bit in Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story where you had to blow into the microphone to make Bowser breathe fire please.
