I was wondering, is Persona 4 a good game for new comers to the dungeon crawler genre or should i start with another game.

I have a 3DS, Wii U and soon a vita/ps4 hopefully and i love RPGs.......

Persona 4 was my introduction to the series and it's awesome and pretty flexible with difficulty.

The vita version is a must have for the console.

Not sure how representative of the dungeon crawler subgenre it is, as Persona 3 and 4 are kind of their own thing, but it IS an awesome game and there's no reason not to play it ASAP.

If your looking into getting into the persona series persona 4 or persona 4 golden are probably the best starting points.
Edit* also if you haven't tried Shin Megami Tensei IV you should it's also really good.

Hmm I would say no, it depends what you like about Persona 4, both are similar gameplay wise (with the SMT IV being a bit more complex than persona's but not by mch) but SMT IV doesn't have the social aspect simulator aspect that most people love about persona 4, and the story is mainly serious so not many of laugh at loud moments you'll find in Persona 4

It's hard to really call Persona 4 a dungeon crawler. It's centered on exploring a dungeon, yes, but there's a lot more going on. It's just as much visual novel as it is traditional RPG. The social system is a large part of what makes Persona its own thing entirely from any other SMT title.

But 3 and 4 are both fantastic. I haven't played Golden as I don't have a Vita yet, but the PS2 original is one of the best JRPGs I've ever had the pleasure of owning.

If you're looking for an entry point into dungeon crawlers, Etrian Odyssey Untold is also a good choice.

EO map making is a huge tuen off

I might just get SMT lV if the social aspect is influence the gameplay to much

The only influence in P4 is the personas the main character can get and the skills your allies can learn (such as saving the main character from a fatal blow by pushing him out of the way) but other than that not much. The game's basically half dating sim half dungeon crawler. Personally Some of the story parts were hilarious there were parts where I literally burst out in laughter.

Different games. Unless you deliberately play it on a high difficulty setting, P4G is pretty relaxed, and a lot of the game's fun comes from observing the various character interactions. SMT IV can be brutally difficult and dark, but it is undoubtedly very enjoyable if you like some challenge in your RPGs.

Didn't the Persona series start as a more relaxed, less hardcore alternative to Shin Megami Tensei?

I got a Vita just last week and been playing P4G since saturday pretty much. Amazing game and yes the difficulty is very flexible. If you go with very hard like me, you'll definitely feel challenged, especially in the beginning, but also like in most jrpgs this basically just translates into more grinding. I liked SMTIV quite a lot, but truth be told I had alot more fun in P3 and in P4 now. The gameplay is not so tedious since the story is constantly moving forward, the character interaction is rich and entertaining and the gameplay, esp. in combat is far less static and feels alot more alive. Last but not least Persona is oozing with the sort of style no other games out there can match not even the main series SMT games. Everything is pleasent to look it, alot of detail, nothing feels really generice, the music is great and in contrast to SMT IV you will really care about the characters. You could also play P3 Fes (PS2 Classic available on PSN for PS3) or P3 Portable (for PSP/Vita), also an amazing game, quite similar to P4. If you like jrpgs I don't believe you can go wrong with either.
When it comes to dungeon crawling, combatwise Persona is certainly a dungeon crawler, but it is still very atypical due to it's social sim and time managing aspect that plays a rather huge role in it. For a mure "pure" dungeoncrawler experience you'd be better of with EOIV or Untold, SMTIV is also much closer to the "typical" dungeoncrawler gameplay since it has a much narrower focus on combat but is lacking in the exploration department.

Out of the Persona 3 versions I think P3P is superior even if Fez have a few hours long playable opinion P3P has the alternative female mind character quest and the ability to control your party directly..... those two things are a dramatic improvement

No, no background needed at all. The games follow similar themes and topics but as far as I could figure out are all standalone.

That's true but you loose the cutscene which kinda dampens the impact I think the story can have. Probably still a good tradeoff though I'd say, just too bad they couldn't fit them =(

I just watched some gameplay of Persona 4, SMT 4 and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers.

When i get my vita im getting P4, and im going to wait for a review for Persona Q

The reason i was really wondering about SMT series was so i can have some idea before FE X SMT comes out

If you have a vita and you are even remotely interested in jrpgs Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable are a must-have. Really no questions there. I'd steer clear of Soulhackers, not a bad game by any means, but I see no reason to give it precedence over SMTIV which is just so much more comfortable to play. The fact alone that you can decide which skills to keep during Fusion saves alot of time and pontless frustration I think. It's far from easy but alot more accessible, also of course Soulhackers can't hide is Saturn origin ^^
In regads to FE X SMT, a game I'm very excited about, I'd assume that it would be closer to Devil Survivor 1/2 and story/settingwise something like SMTIV, since Devil Survivor grid-based gameplay is similar to FE and SMTIV mediveal setting seems also like a reasonable fit wie FE. Also there has to be a reason its not called FE x Perona I wager. Since you got an 3DS have you already checked out SMT DS Overload ?
