EA had Maxis for 18 years. Some great games were published in that time. Recently though, they had been on the decline and Sim City (2013) was a disaster.
This was inevitable, and any other publisher would have made the same decision. EA is bad for closing down good studios, but I think in this case, Maxis had run its course.
@CaviarMeths you do realize that EA is responsible for Maxis to be at a loss right? Part of the reason why Simcity 2013 was bad was because of EA and not Maxis.
Now I got nothing memorable about Maxis and I never got into their stuff but to see this studio go off before the GDC is just....BAD!!!!!!!! XD
I'm saddened by this news (as I'm sure many others are). When I was young I was actually a bit of a PC gamer. Thinking about it now, we had so many games for the computer that you could get on a console, but my sister and I preferred the PC. Maxis titles were always the favourite. I can't tell you how many hours I poured into the original Sims and all the expansion packs. SimCity 3000 and SimCity 4 are also worth mentioning, along with Spore (which was such a neat game).
We shouldn't be shocked as SimCity 2013 was an absolute disaster though. We all know what went wrong with that game, so it doesn't need to be repeated again. Though it's EA's fault in a lot of ways.
Read the news again. They are closing one studio to consolidate it with their own. Maxis will still technically be operational.
Dissolving a studio to swallow all of the staff and assets is not the same as remaining operational. Maxis is still being shut down, and losing their identity and whatever autonomy they may have had. The former staff will now just be another link in the chain of the big, faceless publisher.

Seriously though, even if Nintendo has their own issues, I'm glad Nintendo is NOWHERE as heartless as EA. Heck, I fear that SEGA is also starting to become like EA.....
Sega is nowhere near as big as EA. Even if they were to become like EA, they wouldn't be able to financially weather the backlash that would come of it.

I don't know if they where (it's way before I started frequenting the Internet), but the way they just slowly got rid of the Maxis logo during the upgrades of the Sim 2 always made me uncomfortable.
Eh, Maxis was pretty much ruined thanks to EA anyways.
While I will agree EA ruined them towards the end, people tend to forget that Maxis was losing money when EA bought them, and had not had a hit since Simcity 2000. Pre-EA was also when Maxis unleashed the likes of Simcopter and Streets of Simcity onto the world.
EA runied them in the end, but they also helped Maxis create Simcity 3000 which is still the best game in the series. Before EA stepped in, Simcity 3000 was looking like a major disaster with an ill-advised move into 3D that was being trashed.
So in a way, it's a bittersweet end to Maxis. On one hand, it was under EA's ownership that we got Simcity 3000, The Sims, Simcity 4, and Spore. But on the other hand, EA was also the one who pretty much killed Simcity 2013 with stupid online polices.
The EA era of Maxis is something of a mixed bag. EA helped them out alot when they first bought them, and the the typical EA BS doomed them in the later years.
Still, Maxis lasted far longer then most other companies EA has bought.

@Artwark If Maxis was not turning a profit for some time it is in fact a smart business move. The top dogs at EA, just like any company, must do what is best for the bottom line. While it may be sad that this is how corporations operate, it is just the way it is.
Your comments on Nintendo tell me that you are like many other people and are just emotionally invested in these companies. If you were a shareholder than you would have a change of heart as you would be financially invested (I don't know your age anyway. If you are an adult you will understand what I am saying).
I don't like seeing people lose their jobs or something from my childhood being gone but I understand the reasons why these events happen.

Autonomy? They had no autonomy before the closing.
