Of course it makes sense. They could spend 12+ months making a Wii U version, or the same amount of time making a version that can go on PS4, Xbone and PC. Which one of those two scenarios is going to result in higher sales?
It will probably come to Wii U at some point, but it's quite obvious why the chose to work on an X86 version.

I meant it makes no sense because it seems the kind of game the Nintendo audience would enjoy more than Sony/Microsoft fans would.
Also, I won't pretend to know much about the ease of programming for each console, but aren't there development platforms that support all of them, such as Unity? That's why I don't really buy the "they had to choose between PC/XB1/PS4 or Wii U" justification.
Aren't Sega just publishing? That's how things work. A developer, and a publisher.
^This. Game Freak probably didn't want Nintendo involved, so they chose to go with someone else. Sega picked 'em up, and in classic Sega fashion, told them to put their 2D platformer on every console except the one 2D Platformers sell best on.

Yeah, that would be Sega, alright.
I really wish they would get it together someday, but I doubt they ever will.

@Retro_on_theGo - Oh yeah, the entire time I watched the trailer, I was thinking, "Hey, this is Donkey Kong Country, except the entire time you're playing as Rambi the Rhino!" And you know what? I can dig that.
If it weren't for Issao Okawa, SEGA would have gone bankrupt and should just stay as bankrupt. Its hard for me to believe that the terrible games they make somehow sell well and make them a lot of money. I can't believe that SEGA is still alive and isn't shameful of what they are doing to Sonic and their other IP. I'm greatful of what Issao-san did, but he should've thought twice.

I have no emotional investment in anything Sonic, and Sega made what is possibly my game of the generation, so their free pass from me isn't due to expire for a few more years yet.
Please nobody mention what happened to that game's sequels. I'm in my happy place right now, don't harsh my buzz.
So it seems to be getting average reviews, Edge have given 5/10 and most of the review sum ups seem to be saying the controls are dodgy and the later levels are designed poorly due to not being able to decide if it wants to be a speer runner or platformer.
