@Tasuki The difference in the way Kojima and ND approach their material makes all the difference for me. Kojima's games have strong movie elements, but once the cutscenes and talky bits are over they generally allow you freedom to continue the game the way you want. The gamey elements are very gamey. ND games, on the other hand, make their entire games into interactive movies where there is one predetermined route through the entire game, and you're only free with regard to how you tackle combat. Except even combat scenes in these games are often heavily scripted. Kojima generally leaves you alone once his characters have had their say, but ND never wants to relinquish control to the player lest they muss up the pacing or something.

I would've said the same thing 10 years ago, but I've changed my mind about that. I'm quite open to the idea of a happy in-between medium. If you want to enjoy a good story, then why not play a narrative driven game instead? It's a bit of both, and personally I don't think that's a bad thing. I mean, it's not that NDs games are walking simulators. There's a bit of freedom, but the gameplay is very focused and streamlined. I don't know, just my two cents!

@Octane I can see where your coming from. I mean I really enjoyed Journey and that was for the most part a walking simulator. I will say though I do like stuff like Tell Tale Games like the Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us and I enjoyed Life is Strange and Untill Dawn.

I think it's the fact with the marketing with Kojima's games I guess when they say a game I expect a game where as TWD, Life is Strange etc. The said right off.the bat that they were visual type novels.

@Tasuki I do love a good story, and I do agree that a lot of developers are often going out of their way to put more movie than game into their titles.

My favourite games manage to tell a good story and provide a balance of good gameplay as well as remaining fun throughout. Honestly from the bit I've seen of Death Stranding (which isn't much) I don't like it. I don't advocate gameplay as the whole part of the pie, but neither do I enjoy entire chapters being cutscenes (I'm looking at you, The Order).

Video games are an awesome medium that can provide many means of presenting a story, moreso than a boo or a film could ever do, through the means of interactivity. I suppose it just matters on the implementation of how the director implements story as well as maintaining the interactivity that keeps video games on top of viewer/player attention.

never understood why people say kojima games are more movies than games. i guess most people who say that never played through a single mgs game. the amount of depth in gameplay and overall freedom is way above many other gaming series. mgs5 was the absolute pinnacle of stealth games. story was awesome aswell. mission 43 is the best example of how videogames are a very special medium in terms of storytelling.

so far death stranding looks amazing. cant wait to see gameplayfootage.

@Tasuki I definitely understand your point, but I don't think they're deliberately tricking anyone. I think that it was always pretty clear that a game like Uncharted 4 was going to rely heavily on its narrative. As long as they're not intentionally tricking us in thinking that a certain game isn't what it's actually is, and as long as the trailers and gameplay footage is representative of the final product, then I think that I can judge for myself whether a game is up my ally or not. But in the end, everyone has their own preference, so I'm not going to argue that you should like a certain game.

@6ch6ris6 I have played through Metal Gear on the NES, Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 on the PS2. And I will admit those ones were good but after that they just seemed more like movies then game. I guess you can say that the technology nowadays allows them to do that, but still at what point do we distinguish games from movies?

@Octane: I'm surprised he didn't say Masahiro Sakurai as well.

And just to add a bit to the discussion, this article collects most of the tweets Kojima has made about the game. There was also a recent on about how the game is about "the strand that humanity has lost (or is going to lose)", or something like that. I'm interested to see what this game will look like in the end.
