Well, this is my first Souls game. Just started this game last night. Love the game and even the merciless side kinda adds to it it for me. Plus the battle mechanics are like a dance almost. Of course there is a lot of depth to this game, which will take me tI me to figure out.

Yhorm the Giant was surprisingly easy for a Lord of Cinder, especially considering Siegward of Catarina delightfully joined the fray, which made me quite giddy!

The Storm Ruler packs a hell of a punch against the boss, but is pretty ho-hum away from the arena, which is indeed a shame.

Now I am kind of lost... not sure where I need to go from here on. I must have missed a door or some other not-very-obvious pathway.

After the wearisome Irithyll Dungeon, this game finally gets back on track again.

For those of whom have completed Dark Souls III, how much further have I roughly got left (to go)?

Not too far. But if you'd killed the other 2 lords of cinder, you should have been auto teleported to a certain area from earlier in the game.

Maybe go and do the rest of Lothric Castle?
You need to beat the dancer to progress.

Peek-a-boo

@Dezzy I realised that I hadn't even go out through the archway after defeating Pontiff Sulyvahn!

In fact, I think I just sat down at the bonfire, visited the Firelink Shire and decided to go down those stairs in the Church of Yorshka to Irithyll Dungeon instead.

How I missed a grand archway like that, I shall never know!

To be fair, a lot of bosses in Dark Souls III have a 'dead end' (in a boss arena) so, perhaps that's why I never pushed forward after waving goodbye to Pontiff Sulyvahn.

This is on the back burner until I finish Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.

@Peek-a-boo
Yep, the dead end thing annoyed me a bit. The world doesn't have quite as clever a layout as Dark Souls 1.

I've paused this for Uncharted 4 too! Too many good games. Star Fox didn't stand a chance.

Five months later, I finally completed this.

Firstly, I have only played Dark Souls II up to the Royal Rat Vanguard in the Grave of Saints, in which I was admittedly underlevelled and the mob-like rush of those identical - and poisonous - rats killed me all too frequently... and became somewhat boring.

The reason why I say the above is because I cannot compare the final boss from Dark Souls II to Demon's Souls, the original, Bloodborne and this one.

By crikey, it really was a letdown! The Soul of Cinder, or whoever its name was, is just a thinner and ashy looking version of Pontiff Sulyvahn, and even shared a very similar fiery slash attack that was predictable to see coming.

Granted, when it hits you, it hits you hard, but still gives you enough time to roll away and heal yourself. The moonlight arrow was devastating to use when I backed off far enough.

It feels like they wanted to create a similar battle to Gerhman, the First Hunter... but failed to do so in almost every way. Even the battlefield has flowers, broken swords and ashes of previous combatants.

Talk about playing it safe!

Those three NPCs outside on the roof leading up to the tower in the Grand Archives were much more challenging and satisfying to fight than the last boss. Those Lothric and Lorian Princes could have been a better fit for a last boss IMO. They were somewhat enjoyable (and difficult) to fight.

The ending in all the Souls games are pretty brief and forgettable, and this one was no different. I married Anri and was in completely hollowed form; not sure all that extra effort was worth it to be honest, but at least I got the supposedly best ending, whether it is true or not.

I think Dark Souls III was always in the shadow of Bloodborne, and feels like the 'Best of' Dark Souls rather than being its own thing.

I also think, unlike the original Dark Souls, that the game started off slowly and was very linear - it was also hard going through Farron Keep and the Cathedral of the Deep, back to back, seeing as they are both very large areas and are surprisingly easy to get lost in.

From Irithyll of the Boreal Valley onwards, I had a much better time of things. In fact, I think the game only got better from here onwards, which is a rare and unusual trait for the Souls series.

I personally give this an 8/10.

For me, Demon's Souls is a 9.5/10, Dark Souls is a 9/10 (the second half of the game really let things down) and Bloodborne is a 10/10, especially after the outstanding Old Hunters expansion that had at least two or three of the best bosses in the entire Souls catalogue.

Oh, and Nameless King? The most feared boss in the game?

I killed him on my first go!

This new expansion isn't doing anything for me...

Already done one admittedly lame boss (another wolf?!) and the claustrophobic nature of the plague-ridden (small) town is very awkward, both camera wise and having to consistently witness enemies being able to attack you through solid walls.

Only played it for ninety minutes, and am already on my way to finding the second and last boss of this add-on.

It's easily the worse Dark Souls related DLC yet.

Aaannd done.

That bullpoop second (out of three) phase really dragged the whole boss down. Seeing not one, not two but THREE health bars appearing in one fight is undeniably awful. Just stick with those broken up sequences within one battle, like Ludwig the Accursed did so fantastically well.

Literally the worse content in any of the Dark Souls games. One boss was a gladiatorial arena fight with a Sif lookalike and an easily beaten female gladiator. The other was just long for the sake of being long with three separate phases when the first and third would have been perfectly fine.

Not only that, the items that the gladiator knights drop, who are really hard to defeat, is woeful; either a titanate shard or a frozen resistance moss clump. I think there's only two new weapons too, and they are finicky and awkward to use (both are claw-like weapons).

I am being generous when I give this a 5/10.

@Peek-a-boo I heard the second boss was actually pretty good, according to some internet mumblings at least.

Peek-a-boo

@Octane Not to sound big headed, but I have played all the Dark Souls games and their respective DLC add-on(s) in some shape or form, and that boss I mentioned above is the first reoccurring health bar to appear and reappear three separate times in a single fight.

And given that the second phase was trying so hard to mimic Ornstein & Smough, as well as the third phase being Lady Maria (from Old Hunters) with ice magic attack instead of fire, the sheer lack of originality and padding out for the main boss is really disappointing.

I always try to do a boss on my own at least half a dozen times however, this one was unfair, too long and surprisingly dull.

The reward for defeating the boss?

A bonfire, and a dead end. There's no treasure or a cutscene or anything else.

What an utterly forgettable way to end the main event!

@Peek-a-boo I have also played the game since Demon's Souls and I have to say that while your points sound completely valid, I tend to enjoy the content more than most people even when they find lack of originality in Boss fights. Most times they just have similar patterns to some bosses, but they are still different enough to make the fight interesting for me. It does sound a bit underwhelming from what you say, specially since the dlc from the last games were quite decent, but I'll have to try for myself. The second fight feeling like Ornstein and Smough sounds great for me though, since it will feel like a revisit because I haven't played the first Soul game in a long time.

@roy130390 I'll be interested in what you think of Ashes of Ariandel.

I am a big Souls fan - I more or less purchased a PlayStation 4 just to play Bloodborne - and I always feel happy to receive more Dark Souls content, given that the vast majority of DLC add-on for this series has been just as good if not better than the base game!

What you see in the trailer above is more or less everything; there's no surprises, no real gameplay progression, no continuation of the lore (as such) and no such reward for doing, well... anything really.

By using Ornstein & Smough as an example for the second phase, it is in no way anywhere as good as that fight. It was trying hard to mimic the style of that particular fight, but in a very long winded manner.

You'll see for yourself. I shall personally congratulate you if you do all three stages all by yourself!

I just really, really, really hope that the second part is literally ten times better. This is, for me, the biggest letdown of the year.

@Peek-a-boo I see. Well, I was just going with the things I've heard. I understand the complaint though.

Peek-a-boo

@Octane Some folks like it, especially those who have only just started playing the Souls game since this generation, both Bloodborne and Dark Souls III respectively, whereas those who have played all of the games in the series are pretty ho-hum about it.

Anyway, moving onto more important things.

You started Bloodborne yet?!

@Peek-a-boo Whenever I look at Bloodborne on my shelf, Geralt looks at me with a stern face and says; ''Finish me first.''

They've set too high standards with their DLC I think. I haven't played the DS2 stuff yet but Artorias and Old Hunters are some of the best bits in both of those games and have the best bosses in those games too.
My favourite 2 bosses in all of Dark Souls were Artorias and Kalameet (which has to be the best dragon battle in any videogame ever) and then my favourite 2 bosses in all of Bloodborne were Ludwig and Maria. Pretty impressive given how many there are to choose from.
