Topic: Best Devil May Cry game to start with?

I played Bayonetta for the first time last january, and I absolutely love it. I recently found out that the game took a lot of inspiration from Devil May Cry, so now I'm curious about that series. Only problem, I've got no clue where to start. I've got these systems available:
Wii
PS3 (not the backwards compatible kind)
PC (my laptop is horrible. I'm getting a new laptop this summer, but it still won't be anything like a dedicated gaming pc).
I also have a 3DS, but there aren't any DMC games on that as far as I know.

So which games do you guys recommend me? Which one is the best? Which one is the best to start with?

Start with the first one from 2001. Then play DMC3 and DMC4. You can get them all on PS3.

3 has the best story and is the best game overall, but 4 has slightly better gameplay.

Skip DMC2 for the love of god!

I've been debating on getting that PS3 collection disk, I'm not sure if that's worth it. I hear weird things and I can't tell if it's good.

Devil May Cry 3 sits proudly alongside Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden as the very best action games of all time.

I loved the first and fourth game, but the whole adventure with Dante, Vergil and Lady in the third game is so, so good.

To be able to switch weapons and styles (meaning you are technically switching whole combat mechanics) on the fly is still one of the most recent game changing elements to be added to any action game. It is still as playable today as it was when it first came out too.

To be on the safe side, play the original game first then the third, mostly because going from the third to the first game is surprisingly unexciting in comparison!

This is the one you want:

Thanks guys! I'll keep my eyes out for them then. I'll try to start with the first one, but if I can get the third or fourth one earlier or cheaper I'll probably go with those. Three is definitely the highest on my radar though, seeing how much praise you're giving it. But what's wrong with the second one?
Also, I'm hoping going out of order won't cause me to miss any story elements, right?

@RealPoketendoNL: The second one is just above average. There are two playable characters; Dante and a woman whose name I have forgotten, just like the vast majority of the game.

Dante's side of the game has a few high points, but lots of low points. Feels like you are wrestling with the controls a lot of the time and the bosses are quite uninspiring, especially after the amazing bosses in the original game.

Going out of order doesn't matter a jot!

The third game is a prequel to the first game, and the fourth game is several years after the original and is its own self contained story.

The story in the second game is 'just another day' for Dante and was totally ignored in the fourth one, which shows just how fond Capcom were of that!

In any case, I hope you enjoy playing them. If you need any help, I have completed the first and third game enough times to remember where you may well be struggling at, but let's hope not!

I recommend the HD Collection for PS3. It doesn't include 4 but it does have the first three remastered games for pretty cheap!
Just ignore DMC2. The combat is boring and way too easy, the visuals are ugly and the story is non-existent. Best thing I can say about is you can run on walls. And do cartwheels. Yay...

Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition is the best version of that game but sadly it's only for PC, Xbox One and PS4.
