Hey, I have a similar thread going over at pushsquare.com. Share your personal TOP 5 Games on the Switch here, no matter if Indie Game, eShop, Triple A, First Party, ... anything goes. This topic is meant to inform each other and maybe discover some gems along the way that you personally didn't have on your radar! Sound good?

I go first:

1. Mario Kart 8 | because it's Mario Kart, the quintessential Nintendo Game for me
2. Smash Bros Ultimate | because there's just so much content/fun
3. Moonlighter | because it's such a well thought out little game, playable in short bursts
4. Thimbleweed Park | because I'm old
5. Minecraft | because for me, it never gets old

Note: There are plenty more games I'm interested in and that I THINK I will like, but I haven't played too many yet, so this selection will change over time, naturally.

I love how these lists occur every month or so; I sometimes search for my old lists to compare

1. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I sincerely feel like this is the best game I've ever played. I am a bit over saturated with it now so haven't touched it for a while.
2. New Super Mario Brothers U Deluxe - I've been desperately wanting to play a 'new' 2D Mario game and since I've never owned a Wii U this game cures every itch so far. Love the level design, secrets and challenges so far. Multiplayer chaos is also great.
3. Civilization VI - This was quite a leap; wasn't sure whether I'd like this. It turned out to be the exact relaxed single player game my collection was lacking.
4. Super Mario Odyssey - Great platforming, low replayability though if you're not into a collectathon like me.
5. Mario Kart 8 - My main go-to-game when I have friends over, but I grew tired of the single player campaign quite fast and I'm not an online gamer. Best in the series if you'd ask me though!

Honorable mentions for Mario Party (beaten by MK8) and Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze (beaten by NSMB). As you can see, I'm not quite the indie fan. I've bought a few, but none really lived up to the expectations unfortunately.

Don't know how many of these I've done, but I'm a sucker for a list... Disclaimer: All opinions stated are my own - this doesn't mean anyone else has to share them.

1 - Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild I don't really understand how this could be missing from anyone's top five, unless they haven't played it. Launch title, but still IMHO the best game on Switch. Arguably the best game on anything.
2 - Hollow Knight Huge atmospheric world to explore, extremely challenging yet satisfying combat, great parcelling out of new abilities - it's a perfect Metroidvania, and my favourite 2D title on Switch.
3 - Super Mario Odyssey Just a truly enjoyable game. Once you embrace the collectathon nature, and start hunting for every single moon, it's really special.
4 - Xenoblade Chronicles 2 I love this sprawling, cartoonish JRPG, for all its failure to respect players' time, cheesy anime tropes, slow-loading backgrounds and clipping character models.
5 - TBC. Judging by my playtime, it's Octopath Traveler, which I did thoroughly enjoy (great closing chapter, for those who get that far), but depending on my mood it could easily be Shovel Knight, Dark Souls, Toki Tori 2+ or Splatoon 2. I'm enjoying Smash a fair bit too. These are all great games, but none really stands far enough above the others to nail down the fifth spot. I will say Toki Tori 2+ was the most memorable, as it truly made me think, but at the same time I was glad to finish it in six hours or so and not revisit it...

Honourable mention: The World Ends With You - it is up there with BotW as one of my all-time favourite games but I haven't played the Switch version. If I had, it would probably take 2= with Hollow Knight. Actually, I played the (BRILLIANT!) iOS port of TWEWY, which counts as some kind of hate crime in some Nintendo circles, but is far closer to the Switch version than the DS original.

Games that would almost certainly get onto this list: Mario Odyssey (haven't got round to playing it yet), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (already have it on Wii U), Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (already have the original MHG on 3DS. Though will get this, if, for some insane reason, there's no other MH on Switch). In any case, my top 5 so far would probably be:

1. Doom
2. Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack
3. Splatoon 2
4. Rocket League
5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Doom
Bayonetta 2
Legend of Zelda:Breath of the Wild
Diablo 3

That's pretty much it. I'm not putting eshop games I have in the list....and other's I already have on the WiiU and I'm not reupping on those(Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, some marios). I reupped Zelda and Bayo for the switch but they're still on this list(great games!). I got nothin' else:( I need Daemon X Machina, Bayo 3 and MP4....I need MP trilogy HD. Bring the games, it's ridiculous. I don't want indies. Come to think of it, I reupped Diablo 3 as well from the PC version. Ninty what are you doing for the money? Starlink Battle for Atlas is on my radar.

1. Super Mario Odyssey
2. Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Sadly, there aren't really any other Switch exclusives I've found worthy of putting in a top 5. The other games I enjoyed thoroughly that are on the Switch: Breath of the Wild (which would definitely be #1), Okami HD, and Mario Kart 8 (Deluxe) are not Switch games thus I don't count them. Okami HD is the only one that I originally played on the Switch, and that's because I'd been living under a rock. lol

But if you want a list like that, here:

1. (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild)
2. (Okami HD)
3. Super Mario Odyssey
4. (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe)
5. Super Smash Bros Ultimate

@Harmonie Sorry, did the OP say anything about Switch exclusivity? You're making this way too hard for yourselve

1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (A brilliant re-working of open world game design and the Zelda franchise in general. You could say that this one took my breath away. Easily the best launch title of all time.)

2) Valkyria Chronicles 4 (Everything that made the original such a gem, but with some marked improvements that put it over the top for me. Absolutely incredible experience from beginning to end.)

3) Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle + Donkey Kong Adventure DLC (The quintessential modern example of why you shouldn't always judge a book by it's cover. Somehow this went from a disgrace when the concept art was first leaked to the best exclusive on the Switch when I actually got around to playing it. Everything works so well here: the gorgeous visuals, the rock solid strategy gameplay, the cute presentation, the surprisingly great music, and unlockables + challenges that kept me coming back after I had beaten the core game. The DLC campaign is mostly more of the same, but when the same is this good, that's no weakness. Basically XCOM, but better.)

4) Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (A hugely addictive Action-JRPG with a great core gameplay loop. Some rocking music. Super-fun combat that sees you constantly switching out between different party members. Great QOL features that make tracking down all the stuff located in the world and maximizing your reputation a breeze. Being a Falcom game, the plot and characters are nothing special, but the terrific gameplay really makes up for it. Unfortunately it has a few performance issues on Switch, but nothing that ruins the game.)

5) Xenoblade Chronicles 2 + Torna: The Golden Country (More like two games in one, but one is DLC for the other and supplements the experience, so I feel like it's fair. Anyway, it'd be near the top if it didn't have major performance issues in handheld mode and some unfortunate game design choices, but the game is so fun, epic, and filled with great characters and music that it absolutely belongs on a Top Five Switch Games list. Also has the best DLC campaign ever, one that feels like its own game.)

@toiletduck The OP didn't need to say anything. Take Breath of the Wild for example. I played through that game on the Wii U. Putting it in a personal top 5 Switch games list just doesn't sit right with me. I didn't experience it on the Switch.

I always have this thing with ports - regardless of whether I played the original or not - where I will credit them to their original system over the one they're ported to. You see that with Okami HD, which I never played Okami in any form or fashion before the Switch. I just can't credit my love of it to the Switch.

I only consider games specifically developed for the Switch here. Of the ones I have played, Odyssey and Ultimate are the only ones I can even consider putting in a list. I hope that by the end of the Switch's lifespan that there will be a lot more. At least enough to edge Ultimate off of the top 5.

@toiletduck 😎 Yeah, it's always like, didn't I already list my top five? But hey, lists change over time, and it gives us something to debate...

1. BOTW - I don't see this dropping off my top five anytime soon, even when I haven't played it in months. It's just such a complete package. The only thing that might knock it down would be a new Zelda in a similar style.

2. Civ VI - I haven't had it long but it's the game I was waiting for. My favorite game series, portable. Bring it, Gandhi!

3. Stardew Valley - out-Harvest-Mooning Harvest Moon in every way, complete with true-to-life country characters and delightful music.

4. Skyrim - come on, it's Skyrim. Do I need to explain it?

5. ARMS - our family go-to multiplayer madness. Uniquely Nintendo and never gets old.

@Harmonie In fairness, BotW released as a cross-gen title, so it belongs to both systems, but I get not wanting to include if since you didn't play it on Switch. That can quickly get hairy. Like... I COULD include Valkyria Chronicles 4 on a top 5 PS4 games list, but I never played it on there, so it feels like cheating. Do I include DKC: Tropical Freeze, even though I only ever actually played it on Wii U?

I might start arranging my lists in that fashion from now on. Top 5 Games available on a system, and Top 5 Games I've personally experienced on a system.
