@Grumblevolcano I guess it's possible they won't make a single original 2D Mario game for a whole generation (The GameCube / GBA generation did that if you don't count all the e-reader levels no one could play). Mario Maker, while a core title, isn't an original set of finely tuned levels to explore. But I don't think it's that likely. I'd wager we'll see a rebranding and new art style for the NSMB games, probably near the end of the systems lifespan (2022/2023), possibly as a dual release with the next system.

Two generations, as there was no new 2D Mario during the N64/GBC era either. NSMB was the first new 2D Mario for nearly 15 years.

The 3DS version is. It had nearly enough Nintendo levels included to be an original 2D Mario game, albeit one without a story.

Silly Reader, the last Mario game to have a real story was Galaxy 2. They don’t exist!

I don't know why so many people want to exclude Mario Maker from the main games.

It's canon, it has a (tiny) story - as tiny as the story in Super Mario Bros. -, and it has the best 2D platformer levels of any Mario game!
...And worst, sure, but that's arguably an ok trade-off for having the best as well.

The thing is, you get any kind of quality levels in Mario Maker, from absolute trash to mindblowing ingenuity that not even Nintendo would come up with in a 100 years.

Super Mario Maker is a 10/10 for me and the best Mario game of all-time for me personally.

Every now and then I come up with ideas to make a new level (I created like 50 different levels over 2 years). And Super Expert 100 Mario Challenge never gets old, endless replay value for me.

Haven't touched Super Mario Odyssey since completing it 100% (I loved every minute of it) but I always come back to Super Mario Maker, it's an endless fun game with seemingly infinite content.

@ReaderRagfihs Lubba was enough of a story for me.
