Topic: The racing chaos that is F-Zero 99

@Nintoz I don't think it'll change the frequency of Mute City I much. Tracks like Excitebike Arena, Mario Kart Stadium and N64 Royal Raceway are still picked way too often in MK8 Deluxe despite increasing the number of tracks by 40 (soon to be 48).

@Grumblevolcano Good point!
At least it won't appear quite as frequently in the 50:50 selection.

Finally got the try this out.
First impression wasn't good. Nintendos insistence on assuming anyone who picks up one of their games is a complete moron and can't comprehend basic game rules and controls really wears on me.
Anyway, after I played through the forced tutorial races (which should have been a quick one-screen read) and got into the actual game, it was enjoyable. I doubt it'll replace Tetris99 as my casual-game obsession, but its good for a change up and I like when they do this sort of thing with retro games.

@Cotillion As someone who never played F-Zero I'm one of the morons who appreciated that short 10 minute tutorial. 😝 Even if you personally didn't need it, I suspect if it wasn't required a bunch of 10 years olds would skip it and the games would be even more chaotic (but in a bad way) as a lot of new players didn't even grasp the basic inputs.

I definitely agree with you it was fun but not quite up there with Tetris 99 at least for me. I wish they would bring back Mario 35 and keep occasionally adding games like this without removing them.

@FishyS And that's fine for people who need it. Tutorials are fine in general. They could put in 6 hours of tutorials.....they just need to put the option to skip. And I may have over-ranted a bit there about a 10mins forced tutorial, but it's one thing I hate about Nintendo - forced tutorials with no option to skip. 30-some years of it gets tiring. Its the sole reason I don't replay some Nintendo games.

I've managed to stockpile 32 prix tickets in preparation for the addition of more courses. I'm interested to see how White Land II plays out given the infamous jump.

@Grumblevolcano Imagining that many people trying to figure out that jump for the first time, at the same time, could make for the funniest experience ever.

Saw that the official Nintendo site (Japan) had previews for the F-Zero 99 tracks like they did with the MK8 Deluxe DLC waves. White Land II's infamous gap has been shortened:

@Grumblevolcano Yeah. Seems like Death Wind II's gonna be in the pro section. I did see that preview video earlier... glad they shortened that jump. Still remember that one part from the SNES game like it was yesterday.

Fun fact: Being first in Team Battle doesn't count for most achievements that require you to come first, they require a normal 99 race, but it does count for the one where you need to be first with every vehicle. Just noticed this while browsing unlock requirements. I got first place in Team Battle last week. Still unable to do it in regular race. I got third place again yesterday.

Played three of the new tracks today. Haven't tried out the new Grand Prix yet. That's for tomorrow. Glad we got more content so soon. I guess they wanted to ease players in before adding harder courses. Probably better for the player base.

It's its, not it's.

Funny how I've now finished first in every mode other than the regular 99 race.

Got first place in Grand Prix yesterday, just a single race, not the whole GP. I was 10th in first race, then 1st in second which took me all the way up to 1st in whole GP but then I got ranked out in the 3rd race. Didn't realize it before it was too late.

Today, I got first place in Pro Tracks thanks to well timed skyway boost. I think it was my only skyway boost for the whole race since I was doing pretty good and thus didn't get as many sparks.

So now I'm in a situation where I'm yet to unlock any vehicle customization that you get from being 1st in regular race but I'm 3/4 when it comes to the badge that requires you to finish 1st with every vehicle. Somehow I happened to have different car for each race when I got 1st so now I just need to do the same with Blue Falcon.

It's its, not it's.

Just got 4th place in Port Town I... that's probably the highest place I've gotten in this game!

Now that Queen League is available, maybe I should make time this weekend to give the new courses a go. Haven't been able to check them out yet.

@MarioLover92 Congrats!

MarioVillager92

@Sunsy Thank you! This is probably the first time I got 1st in an online race. It probably won't happen too often given how this game works, so I'll definitely be a happy guy every time I get 1st.

I got on this site and registered, just so I could say this game would be absolutely terrific without the lucky bumper idiocy. I have lost count of how many races I've lost because some toolbag who flamed out early' only joy in life is trolling people at the end of the race. It is a terrible feature and should be discontinued. Horrible.

I looked back at the Direct trailer and there's currently only 1 thing missing from the game at the moment. There was gameplay of Fire Field with 45 players but at the moment you can only play Fire Field with a maximum of 20 players (it's GP exclusive and the final track of a GP). So I'd guess one of the future updates will be adding Silence, White Land II and Fire Field into the other modes.

99 player Fire Field sounds fun.
