Topic: The racing chaos that is F-Zero 99

How do you like that, we got a new F-Zero game in 2023. It may be a battle royale based off the Super NES game, but still. Have anyone else given this a try yet? Played this afternoon and this evening, and holy cow, it's pure racing chaos. The races are so chaotic, and I love it!

Loving the game so far, bizarrely it reminds me of the rush hour mode from the Wii version of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (I'm probably the only one here who played that version). There's a "safe zone" number you need to be in, or get eliminated. At least that's what I'm understanding anyway. I either finished my races or get ko'd.

I guess, F-Zero 99 thread is a go. Highest rank for everyone? Me, it's 15th.

I haven't played too much of it yet, but so far I'm really liking it as well. It controls a little differently compared to the SNES original, but it's nothing major. Can't wait to play more of it. I didn't think we were getting anything new from the F-Zero series, yet here we are! This was a good game to make into a battle royale I think, especially since the original game was single player only.

@MarioLover92 Yeah, it was a surprise since the series hasn't had a new entry in forever. One difference I noticed was the spin move, I don't think that was in the original. I really like how this is practically like an HD version of the original, and still has that mode 7 feel.

The original was single player, so I like the addition of making it multiplayer. Boy the races get really chaotic, lol.

Okay I can't lie, this is actually pretty fun lol. For the past hour I've been telling myself "just one more race..." my highest rank was only 35th though 😅

@Sunsy haven't played it yet, but will sometime, bit disappointed it wasn't a new fzero GX game though

I love this game so much already. Somehow got two 1st place wins in a row. I see myself getting addicted

My initial impression is this game kinda rules, but partially because its...completely ridiculous. Like the final boost pad before you enter the proper racetrack, one of the dumbest things I've ever seen in a Nintendo game and I love it for that.

It's a 9 out of 10 for me.

Using that final boost at the last turn with your power at zero hoping to not crash is butt clenching.

Even though it wasn't the best outcome, this game is still a blast!
And there are plenty of unlockables and limited-time modes/challenges as well which is lovely.

ONE CAN SIMPLY RIDE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACK, COLLECTING THE "COINS"/"RINGS" FROM ALL THE MANY COLLISIONS. FOR ME IT IS TOO REMINISCENT OF MARIO KART, THOUGH I RECOGNIZE NCL'S DESIGN PHILOSOPHY HERE - IT LEVELS OUT MATCHES TO GIVE LOWER-SKILLED PLAYERS MORE OPPORTUNITIES

IT MAY NOT HELP AS MUCH ON ÉLITE TRACKS LIKE SILENCE OR PORT TOWN, BUT I FEEL SKILL SHOULD BE REWARDED. RANKING HIGHER IN THE EARLY LAPS, AHEAD OF THE SPARK-SPEWING CROWD, MAY NOT BE THE BEST STRATEGY

The chaos in this game is divine.

@CANOEberry They are pretty much the only tracks I've been able to play. Deathwind and sand(whatever its called).

So, I played a few rounds of the game.
Got ranked #20 in the Grand Prix leaderboard??? Don't know what that exactly means, but sure, why not.
It feels just like a 99 game feels. But I'm not sure if you are able to win 100% with skill. Like at Tetris 99 or Mario 35. F-Zero 99 appears to be at least half luck based.
It's pretty fun for a few rounds now and then.

@Sunsy Yeah, the spin attack wasn't in the original game. It was in F-Zero X where we could first do the spin attack. The way boosts work was taken from that game as well.

On a side note, I almost got 1st in Silence, but ended up getting 2nd that race. It was a close one. At least I'm generally pretty good at doing the shortcut near the beginning.

Is Silence playable outside of GP mode for the multiplayer modes? I finally unlocked it for Practice but that's because I managed to finish a GP but by that point of the cup there's only 20 players.

I admit I was hoping for mario kart 99 which basically would have been this plus shells bouncing everywhere. 😆 Really enjoying this game though. I love the chaos.

I am really enjoying this. I really hope they add some more modes. 25 player online racing and leaderboards for time trials would be amazing. The fact it has 25 and 50 vehicle races in the tutorial makes me think more racing modes will be added in time.

Something is telling me they're going to launch the new console with a 3D Mario and F-Zero. This is just a taster to build some interest in the series. If we do get a new one, I'd love for it to be In that comic book style. It would look incredible.

I’m pretty terrible at FZero so I’m not sure if I will play but as soon as I saw it I knew Nintendo was on to something. The premise of the series is that it is chaotic and dangerous and this is a fantastic way to demonstrate that. All the monkey paw naysayers I sometimes wonder if they only played GX or something. It’s not like this isn’t based on an existing version of the franchise.
