When we started making Bayonetta 2, we initially received funds from Sega to develop the game for multiple platforms, but the project was halted due to circumstances at Sega. Nintendo then stepped in to continue funding the game, allowing us to finish it.
As such, the rights belong to Sega and Nintendo. The rights owners decided the game should be made for Wii U. Nintendo was also kind enough to fund a port of Bayo 1 for Wii U, and they even allowed us to use the Japanese voice track we created for the Wii U version in the PC version of Bayo 1 as well.
I am extremely thankful to Nintendo for funding the game, and to Sega for allowing them to use the Bayonetta IP. As for Bayonetta 3, it was decided from the start that the game was going to be developed using Nintendo's funding. Without their help, we would not have been able to kick off this project
All of the rights still belong to Sega and Nintendo. The rights owners decided that the game should be made for Switch.

@Octane See the above link that is Hideki Kamiya explaining that Nintendo and SEGA are joint rights owners.
In the instance of Bayonetta 2 for an example, its stated they own some of the characters. Characters that are part of the Bayonetta license, therefore they own part of Bayonetta as an IP. Now the IP may or may not be free for SEGA to do whatever with, but the parts of the property owned by Nintendo are not for them to use.

@YummyHappyPills Yeah, the own the rights of the second and the third game, not the IP however. SEGA can't release Bayonetta 2 and 3 on PC without Nintendo's consent, and Nintendo can't make a Bayonetta game without SEGA's consent.
Small note: Sakurai has confirmed over Twitter that he's been working on the game in secret... every day after he took his few month long break from Sm4sh DLC.
So 2.5ish years for this game.

@Octane Except... That contradicts what Kamiya said last month, that Nintendo owns part of Bayonetta. I wouldn't be surprised if Sega can't use any of the characters or locations introduced in 2 or 3 without Nintendo's permission, which would make them partial owners of the IP based on what he said.
@link3710 It doesn't contradict what Kamiya said. He never said Nintendo owns part of the IP. He only said they own part of Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta 3.
''As such, the rights [of Bayonetta 2] belong to Sega and Nintendo.'' and ''All of the rights [of Bayonetta 3] still belong to Sega and Nintendo.''
He even confirmed that SEGA is the IP holder: ''I am extremely thankful [...] to Sega for allowing [Nintendo] to use the Bayonetta IP.''
Does that make Bayonetta a Nintendo IP? No. Does that make Bayonetta (as she is seen in 2) a Nintendo character? Partly.
I don't think the Smash tease in Bayonetta 2 Switch would've happened if Rodin wasn't going to be in Smash Switch in some form. Could be a stage where he's a hazard (e.g. Yellow Devil, Ridley, Metal Face), could be an assist trophy or could be a playable character.
That was never a reference to Smash Bros. I don't understand why people think it is. Little do people know that it is a reference to another game she was a downloadable character in called Anarchy Reigns.
@Snaplocket So you propose there is a reference to Anarchy Reigns in the Switch port of Bayonetta 2 released specifically after her inclusion in Smash, that is unlocked by scanning a Smash series amiibo that references a fight club full of all stars?
And you think that ISNT at least in part referencing Smash?
It jusr dawned on me how close to Aurora Borealis in the Kitchen that played out.
If there's something I wish they would bring back, it's target smash and board the platforms. But I guess having a unique level for each character is just too much work for a relatively minor part of the game these days, with its giant roster
@MisterPi Yeah, I hope that they bring them back too - those modes were a lot of fun to play, which surely has to count for something? ..here's hoping!
I also hope that the Home Run Contest will feature in Smash Switch - it usually (always?) does, so the chances seem pretty good...it's just something that I find strangely addictive and satisfying - hope I get to ping a few sandbags around when the new game drops!
@AlternateButtons Melee bonuses were all fun & games until you tried to get the Diskun trophy. Melee even had a VS. mode where the whole point was to win by scoring as many bonus points as possible, but y'know... nobody touches anything that isn't Stock with a ten-foot pole.
