I think this could be something like the NX. I have a couple reasons for this, and i'll break it down and show how i think it makes sense in regards to Nintendo's big 3 of Takeda-Miyamoto-Iwata (RIP). Also before you just assume i'm a crackpot the only other time i thought i figured something out was when i called Amiibo launching with Smash Bros: https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii-u/nfp_in_smash_bros_an...

We know obviously that Nintendo and Takeda know of this and other AR/VR tech. and is experimenting with it given this video and some previous patent applications. Furthermore, Nintendo tends to utilize somewhat dated technology, which this would now be, in order to reduce costs and increase the reliability of their products. Takeda seems to be very much in line with the thinkings of Yokoi when it comes to hardware, and he also seems to be very passionate about innovation. This would obviously be a unique concept and something none of Nintendo's competitors are doing yet it would still provide a reasonable entry into the AR/VR market. I could see this fitting in with Takeda's and Nintendo's previous stances on hardware development.

In the past Miyamoto who has stated that he believes that current incarnations of VR are "isolating" and not the kind of experience Nintendo looks to create. Miyamoto has suggested in previous interviews that he wants VR/AR tech. to be something that can be enjoyed by many people at a time and not just one person, he believes that makes the experience more fun. He's also expressed concern about motion sickness and head/neck discomfort. This would be enjoyable by many at a time, would certainly be considered revolutionary, and it wouldn't present any comfort issues, meaning it fills the Miyamoto requirements.

And lastly Iwata has suggested the NX is not going to replace the Wii U but instead be another pillar, this of course may be another situation like the DS where it does actually replace it, but given the uniqueness of the platform it would make sense for him to phrase it that way, justin case it ends up like the Virtual Boy instead. It also would make sense for Nintendo to be experimenting with their own forms of VR/AR tech. given the fact that Sony and Xbox are, along with the hype around Oculus Rift. I also think this would fit in very well with Amiibo, imagine scanning your toy not just in a game but in an animated hologram that's simply awesome sauce.

I don't know if it would come complete as it's own console, have it's own processing power but be fairly simple and require additional hardware, or simply be a peripheral (i highly doubt it), but i would guess it would have stand alone capabilities and be compatible with other Nintendo devices like the Wii U. Perhaps it's in anticipation of the NX that the New 3DS is being phased in? It has a whole bunch more processing power and yet it hasn't been utilized much outside of a few games. I think this would fall in line with the recent philosophy of platforms supporting platforms and being cross compatible, and would be a strong step towards a unified platform.

I could certainly be way off but i think this is a very reasonable guess as to what this could be and tbh i'm pretty darn good at figuring stuff out. If anyone finds this little theory interesting please let me know, i'd love to hear what you have to say.

SuperWiiU

Quality holograms aren't cheap to make, even more so on a larger scale so that it could work for a homeconsole. And I don't think they could make it into a real handheld either. It would have to be too big and heavy(and power hungry). I fear that there would need to be too many sacrifices for the NX. Maybe it could work in another 5-10 years as a follow-up to the NX, but I would be very surprised to see this be a major feature of the NX. Maybe they'll test the water with an add-on.

Syntech

Buys new Nintendo handheld
Opens it to find there is no screen, just a square hole between the controles
WTF?
Opens game to find no cartrage, just a crystal cube
WTF?!
Sits and thinks for a minute
Places cube in square hole, hologram appears inside the cube
WTF??? OMG!!!
head explodes

Problem with AR is it can't be used with some games. Most notably ferst person. The AR woild have to transform the entire space, or create a window so you could see long distances which pretty much means your using your AR like an projector. Imagine playing Super Mario 64 with AR/holograms. You would need a very large space, or have Mario extremely small to see enough of the terrain to know where your going.

BlueSkies

I doubt they will be replacing the television (simply because of the cost), but they can achieve essentially the same effect using their gaze and head tracking technology that they have patented.

@Syntech: Haha, right it would be awesome. I actually could see it being very much like the display but smaller and used in conjunction with a TV display. Like something from this kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1314339634/holus-the-int... . Say in a JRPG imagine if you could search the world on the TV screen but play out the battles on the "NX". I also agree that some games wouldn't be ideal for the periphial but man would it be cool for the ones that could use it. I don't think any form of VR is appropriate for all game types tbh. What i do think is that whatever the NX is we'll be surprised by the ambition of the innovation, i don't think Nintendo is going to play it safe and release a Ps4/XBone competitor. It'll be cool to see what they do.

@SuperWiiU: There's actually already something similar that's been kickstarted. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1314339634/holus-the-int... .

@BlueSkies: Perhaps something like this could work in conjunction with a TV is what i was thinking. They don't have to be insane holograms, heck any hologram is cool in my books.lol . I could also see this working in conjunction with the head tracking tech on TV's, i believe this is what you are talking about right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw . I actually see that as being relevant to this possibility. Good comment.
