Topic: NFP in Smash Bros. and other upcoming games

I was thinking about Nintendo's NFP platform and i realized just how perfect it would be for Smash Bros. Then i realized that the release date given in the investor window and the release date for Smash Bros. were nearly identical. From Nintendo:

"At E3 to be held in L.A. this June, we will announce which titles are compatible with NFP, display NFP products and disclose more specific information about NFP, which will be launched during this year-end sales season. "

This coincides with Smash Bros. Wii U's first showing and release date. Think about how you could put stickers on your character in Brawl, and it doesn't even seem like that new of an addition. According to Nintendo:

"NFP has a writer function as well as a reader function, so it can not only tell what character figurine is on the Wii U GamePad, but also a compact amount of data unique to each game can be written into it and read from it. That is to say, you will be able to customize your NFP to raise or train your own Nintendo characters, for example."

With Smash Bros. new inclusion of personalized move sets players could literally bring their personal player with them to tournaments. This is going to be huge as it's a perfect fit for competitive hardcore gamers and kids who just like the idea of having a cool toy. I really think this is going to be the killer app the Wii U needs it to be an it's going to be the reason players will buy the Wii U version despite the 3DS being out earlier.

Other that Smash Bros. though i'm really curious to see what games utilize this, i think Yarn Yoshi and a Mario Sports game seem like prime candidates for a recent release. Mario Kart would be a good fit but i think that ship has sailed. I'm really curious to see if they start a new series using these toys, a Nintendo action adventure. A console Pokemon game seems like a good fit even though they're not my cup of tea.

i think we figures for smash is bad. we already have a roster. do you think we should have to buy the figures to play as them so 33 toys at least? or do you think the nfs will give players an advantage i mean the mario figure has to do something right?

nonononono
it would ruin smah. this needs to be for some skylanders type game.

Since the NFC figures are supposed to work across multiple games they should release the figures as an alternative to DLC it would be awesome for smash bros and mario kart, say you want some random character you can go out and buy the figure and use that character in both games.

Edit: though for smash bros the characters will need to be heavily tested so they don't break the game, if not just disable them for online play.

what about balance? you mean a clone you can set any move too? completely destroys the purpose of smash and would ruin it.

lol edited the post while you were typing this up, also I meant the characters would have their own move sets not custom ones because that is kinda game breaking

It's no Skylanders IMO, by writing data onto the cards they would essentially act as character specific memory cards meaning that you could still play the games full roster without the models but could now bring the models to say a friends house or a tournament and have your characters customized move set (an announced new feature in Smash) and personal win-loss data ect... With the NFP's ability to read and write it could also process save data from other games, old and new, and offer specific trophies and the like for having played/beaten the game. So for example say you have Star Fox 64 3D data on your 3DS with the reader function your Star Fox character can unlock a trophy or even a move (too far IMO). Ton's of interesting options and because of the reading and writing function they would be far more comprehensive. I really feel like this is going to happen, makes too much sense IMO.

This also had me thinking about Pokken fighters (if it ever becomes a thing) the figures would be a good way to save ranked info for tournaments, though I suppose this would work for smash too.

I actually don't think they'll be used in SSB, even though it seems like the perfect game for it.

Just a gut feeling.

I'm sure the game would require DLC for this to work but you could certainly bundle it as downloadable with more models. I'm sure they will not be essential to the gameplay or getting any DLC whatsoever as it relates to Smash, but they'd certainly be one hell of a neat addition. It would seem to be a plausible way to extend shelf life. And to ramble on a bit more the Mario figure in the presentation looks very similar to his depiction as a toy in Smash, i'm sure that's partially a coincidence but it also seems awfully convenient to me.

Don't you think it's interesting that they've been projected to be presented and phased in at the same time as Smash Bros. first showing and release? That to me is what really has me thinking it's going to happen, along with the fact that all of Nintendo's ip's are recognized (the key emphasis of the platform), and the fighters in Smash Bros. are literally little models just like the one shown. It makes WAY too much sense and it's WAY too much of a coincidence. I think it's obvious with the Wii U Smash being delayed and the 3DS smash having it's own exclusive game mode (Smash run) that the Wii U is going to have a gamemode or something far bigger and better to allow it to be desirable and still be the definitive version i'm sure Nintendo needs it to be. Again NFP fit's the bill to a tee.

They could also do a line of figures for smash's existing characters that could give characters extra skins kinda like how project M is with characters like bowser getting a dry bowser skin or Lucas getting a Masked man skin.

This is part of why I wasn't happy to hear the NFP announcement. I don't want to have to purchase extra peripherals just so I can fully use a game I've bought.

What i think will happen will just enhance the game and offer features previously unavaliable, this is why it's being called a new platform and not an accessory. I have no idea how you can be so negative towards something so cool.

Because I've been alive long enough to recognize a money sink when I see one.

Anyone who's ever played Pokemon (the card game), Magic: The Gathering, Warhammer, any Pen & Paper game, Skylanders, or Disney Infinity can tell you, these products are designed to pull as much cash out of your coinpurse as possible.

I don't seem to see how those things ruined any games or were essential to the gameplay other than Skylanders and Infinity which i'v meticulously explained why i think this will be different... Here's a hint: Don't buy it.

Disney Infintt having even certain items tied being the power disk random format ruined the game for me.

It sounds interesting to use these in Smash. But I would see them as an option, thus being relegated to a custom mode. Like in Brawl you could set special rules (play as metal, giant, etc) then you would do the same for these, as to not break the game for serious players.

And I don't see them as a huge cash grab either, as you can use them for different games, something Skylanders/Infinity lack.

Something that I found odd: to call them NFP for Nintendo Figurine Platform. I would have used Nintendo Figurine Collection, to match the NFC acronym of the technology itself. Just a nitpick of mine.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

If Nintendo wants to make money with this idea specifically, it has to appeal to me as little as possible.

...that makes me a little sad.

I think they could be used in Smash, since the graphic shows a figurine being used across 3 different games, but I don't think they will be a big part of Smash or will be required to get the most out of Smash.

I think they will be mostly for new games, including maybe a cross platform game playable on both Wii U and 3DS since 3DS is supposed to get a NFC reader at some point in the near future.

it would be neat if it was sort of like a glorified memory card. instead of having to buy certain characters to get certain things, you can buy any character and then save any data from supported games into it. of course something like that could be done without the figures all together.
