@bluemage1989 This is my mini review posted on the news thread.

It looks like I am the first person that have played it that comment on this. It's a beautiful platformer with a really nice art style and soundtrack. It's also quite funny. The controls are totally smooth and intuitive. The camera is semi-automatic, you can turn it right or left but you don't need to do it very often (mostly for finding secrets) so you can focus on controlling Lucky. Because of this it's quite similar to Super Mario 3D World but I think Super Lucky's Tale is better. It has an additional world and challenges added via DLC.
It features a burrowing technique that it's a lot of fun to use and several types of levels: 3D, 2.5D and puzzle. It's really fun and I loved it but if they make a sequel it should be a bit more ambitious, in this game you can't swim and you can't go absolutely everywhere. A bit more ambitious and it would be one of the best 3D platformers ever. I still recommend it if you can forgive that.

Wonderful 101 comes to mind regarding Super Lucky's Tale, it seems like a case of a good game that came at the wrong time.

@Grumblevolcano Yeah, Super Lucky's Tale was compared to Super Mario Odyssey by some reviewers in the first paragraph and that is stupid because it's more similar to Super Mario 3D World. The Wonderful 101, however, I think it was a bit rough technically. The demo was a real mess and put many people off.

This still seems like a weird announcement.....it's being reported as all but confirmed, but how does a Microsoft published title end up on other platforms. What's next, Breath of the Wild: XBox One X Enhanced edition? Though it's apparently on Steam which also doesn't make sense....MS is all about Microsoft store on PC. I'm guessing ol' Mattrick was messing up the publishing contracts in addition to hardware strategy back when this game was signed on, if this is possible at all.

@Grumblevolcano For 2D platformers, IMO X1 has the best D-Pad of the generation. Pro Controller is very very so-so on the D-Pad...not bad, not amazing. DS4's D-pad is hot garbage, I'd rather wedge toothpicks under my fingernails that play 2D platformers with that thing. X1 controller has a really nice D-Pad for platformers, though, the Elite with the disc is the single best platformer controller I've ever owned. I got a Brook X One to use the Elite on my Switch.....DKC:TF, Megaman, and Shantae control amazing with it. Pro controller is good, but easily left in the dust by that. Close second is the original NES D-Pads....having the classic controllers for Switch now I remembered how those archaically bad platformers were actually playable back then: The NES D-Pads were/are amazing.

For 3D platformers, there's really not much difference at all between Pro an X1 controller is there? I mean Switch Pro, other than the D-Pad and triggers, basically is an X1 controller, albeit with the lowest spring tension on the sticks of any controller I've ever used, while PS4 has the second highest tension only below GCN (wow that GCN was really really terrible for platformers....) The only "negative" for X1 is it has slightly taller sticks than Pro and DS4. I guess the larger throw could make it feel off for platforming, but can anything really feel more off than the trident shaped N64 controller that inexplicably was used for all the best 3D platformers?

Luckys a good game, just not as good as 3d World, it's welcome all the same.

@NEStalgia. I don't think Microsoft owns the IP.

The fist game (Lucky's Tale) was PC exclusive, for VR devices even. I believe that MS just moneyhatted the second game (Super Lucky's Tale) for console exclusivity, and the changes made to it in this new New Super Lucky's Tale variant (some remixed old levels, and some entirely new) changes it enough to let the devs break the MS agreement.

Of course, with Cuphead (where they publicly thanked Microsoft for the opportunity to release it on Switch), and the Banjo in Smash reveal, it's hard to say for certain if MS has anything to do with it.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

@RR529 You're right, it's weird the publisher is listed as Playful...I can't imagine they're self-publishing a physical edition of a game as an indie....so either MS is stealth-publishing for them, or Nintendo's stealth-publishing. Playful can't fund that alone. And MS was putting the character in all it's Game Pass promo material next to Phoenix, Chief, and the Sea of Thieves pirates as their character stable last year. So I think it's safe to say MS is very involved with it on one level, and probably involved with the release. Between Cuphead, Banjo/K.Rool, Minecraft, MineCraft Dungeons, etc, MS is getting pretty involved with publishing on Switch, so I don't think they'd have hesitated in assisting this franchise in the port.

The other article about Phil talking about Game Pass and Switch seems pretty solid that they don't see Switch as a competitor so much as a platform opportunity for the real product: Software & services.

@Yorumi According to Nintendo’s E3 page for the game “New Super Lucky’s Tale features all new levels, story, cinematics and character dialogue, tighter movement and player controls, a fully rotatable 3D camera, and sweet upgrades to nearly every other aspect of the game, including art and lighting, UI, sound, music, and more!”

@Galarian_Lassie Neat, guess it'll be worth the wait, then. I've been meaning to grab Super Lucky's Tale on PC for some time now, but a Switch version that improves it in every way is more than I could've ever asked for!

Want to give a heads up. I don't know if this is in any other regions, the North American eShop has a demo up for New Super Lucky's Tale. If this demo is in other regions, or anyone who lives in North America wants to give Lucky's game a try, you can now.

Just found it from checking the eShop.

Is there any way to make Lucky running fast like Mario ?
I have tried the Demo version and there was no way to make Lucky running.
Btw, the camera angle was 360 degree like Super Mario Odyssey but the fps = 30 fps.

Having played the game, my verdict is 👍

Seriously, the game is great. The mechanics are so precise it feels just as high-quality as any Nintendo platformer or Mario game I’ve ever played. Mechanics so good it’s fun just to move around, do double jumps, ground dive, burrow underground, skate down inclines, tail swipe mid air, etc. The characters are incredibly well done also. Very endearing and likable.

The game is just fun all around. I don’t think it’s as good as say, any Mario game I’ve ever played, but it’s probably the best 3D platformer I’ve played since Odyssey. Way better than Yooka Laylee. Might be better than A Hat In Time too, but I haven’t played that one yet so I’ll have to see once it arrives in the mail.

The puzzles are fun, the 2D segments are a nice curveball, the 3D world hub is slick, the challenges are engaging... ya. This is a solid game. The changes and improvements have made quite the difference it seems.

@Anti-Matter Playing the demo again this morning, I kind of notice he walks really slow when pushing the left stick a bit, and walks fast with the left stick pushed all the way. I'm also noticing he's walking on two legs, where as the PC version, I noticed he's running on all fours like an actual fox. I have Super Lucky's Tale on PC, and picked up on it.

From what I played, it feels like there's a lot of focus on exploration in this rather than being the kind of game to speedrun in. I'm noticing areas I missed the first time I tried the demo.

Few hours in on this. I consider myself a platforming gamer, so here are my thoughts:

-Solid, solid, solid. The controls feel juuuuuust about right, but not perfect. It almost feels like there is just a tad bit more input lag than you'd expect in a platformer. I find myself pressing jump a hair earlier than I would in Mario or DKC, for example. But the character is fun to control, the move set is simple but can be strung together for fun traversal. Stick rotation is tight - Lucky will do tighter circles than Mario in Odyssey when running at speed. Does NOT feel "floaty" like lots of 3rd-party platformers, usually my main complaint. I would put control feel somewhere between Odyssey and Spyro.

-Hit detection and platforming is excellent, though again not perfect. I've had a few moments where detection seemed a hair off, especially on flying enemies. The platforming is awesome, though. Easy to tell where you're going to land in both 2D and 3D sections, even moreso than Odyssey at first blush, in my opinion. The platforming depth perception just clicks right away, and I can't say that for every game, especially something like Crash Bandicoot.

-Graphics are nice. The coins you collect are satisfying to pick up. Characters all have nice design and love behind them. Definitely skewed more towards kids than your average Mario game, even, but adults can enjoy it as well.

-First world was a cake walk even finding everything first time through. Second world maybe 3rd-ish level was the first time I didn't naturally find everything in the level just playing through (I think there are 6-7 worlds, each world seems to have 5-6 stages).

I agree with @JaxonH in that this is WAY better than the first Yooka Laylee game (haven't played Lair yet, that will be a good comparison). Plus, 40 bucks not on sale. I'm sure you'll start seeing this for 25-30 bucks soon. If you like platformers at all, pick it up. I'm pleasantly surprised by the number of 2D stages so far, as well. If I've played about a dozen levels, I'd say 4 have been 2D. I was expecting a lot fewer.
