The social reactions to this game are ridiculous. The game has not even released to the public. People who continue to feed into this ridiculousness and judge the game before even playing it are, in my eyes, the reason why this hobby has long since passed its prime. Like I said, play before you buy, even if it is 10 minutes at a demo kiosk. If you judge before playing at all, I don't respect your opinion.

Pokemon games are rarely, if ever, available at demo kiosks. So pretty much the only thing we have to go one before we buy is all the promotional material and interviews. And the only thing that has mildly raised an eyebrow from me up until now is the Wild area.

And it isn't like this is a new franchise in a never before seen genre. This is Pokemon. We've played past games, and know what things we like and dislike. I know how I like to play the games, and I know what I like and dislike about turn-based RPG systems. Based on that, I can say with pretty decent confidence that the inability to turn off Exp Share will significantly harm my enjoyment of the game.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

The game is pretty standard it seems aside from the Wild Area. By standard, I could have seen these games getting 9s, but with the Wild Area, I think 8s would be considered generous. It's unfortunate that they felt the need to slap an open area into the game. I've watched a stream; however, the streamer wasn't shiny hunting so I still need information on that before I either buy or don't.

I think it is fair to form an opinion based on pre-release footage. After all, that's what trailers are for. That being said, I'm going to reserve my official verdict until I've played the games. It's just that I've seen things that I didn't like in previous games, that are now made mandatory instead of optional. And considering Pokemon is a very numbers-based game, it's easy to tell what's to like and what isn't if you have experience with the games.

Considering the death threats, if those are real, then yes, I surely condemn them. However I haven't seen any yet, and this thread has been surprisingly calm.

I remember going to the Sun & Moon launch event, it was loads of fun but one of the things I didn't do there was play the game early as it'd be such a meaningless experience and freed me up to do the other things there. I know how the game works already and it's too limited of an experience for the things I want to find out, besides the fun for me in Pokemon has always been building and investing in my own team.

@BlackTalon2 Yeah, Copperajah is a good looking one. I'm not really sure how an elephant is British though unless there's a part of the game which comments on the British empire's rule of India.

Pre-release, without even playing the game I am already aware of three things that are huge counts against the game:

The obvious lack of National Dex. EXP Share being required. And (something I learned today from the leaks, so I'll spoiler it) the day/night cycle has been removed.

Given how much RSE removing the day/night cycle soured my opinion of them I already have a substantial feel of how I'll feel about this game and that's sad. I don't know why GF does this nonsense. I love Galar. I love the wolf legendaries. I love Galarian Ponyta, and am excited to see all of the new Pokemon/regional forms that I haven't been spoiled of... But, boy, it's hard to deny how mediocre this game looks. =(

@Harmonie So much for all that "game footage isn't final" talk. Huh?

I hadn't realised that, how is Eevee gonna evolve into Umbreon or Espeon now?

@Snaplocket The footage of the leaked game show no improvement over the Wild Area we were shown at E3. The trees still look like OOT trees.

@jump I heard it on another forum and have not been following the leaks as I want to leave some up to surprise, so I'm not really sure of the details. However, IIRC, I think the person who posted about it mentioned that certain areas are set at certain types of day. That's probably how Espeon and Umbreon work. BUT take this all with a grain of salt.

Sun and Moon were definitely not over 40 hours. I expect these games to be around the 30 hour mark with little postgame. Anyone expecting significantly more is either unrealistically hopeful or just plain delusional.

Oh no.... looks like even that was expecting too much from this game, given that players are reporting a playtime of only 15 to 20 hours (tbf, they might have been rushing it).

@Harmonie Hey, I just wanna ask. If the game was stellar in just about every way BUT the graphics, would you be more positive? I'm asking because I've played some games that really don't look much better (Cold Steel III, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Disgaea 4 Complete +) but I still love them to death because of everything else. Also, games very, VERY rarely show significant difference from pre-release footage. In fact, more often then not it'll worse because most pre-release trailers are usually pre-rendered CGI. (you know, because there's no actual graphics yet)

@Snaplocket Depending on how fast you take things, one's playtime in these titles can vary wildly. I'd basically expect this to be about as long as most later-gen Pokemon games.

And yeah, people who play leaked copy of games to gab about them online usually aren't stopping to smell the roses.

I will say here, this thread (and this game) has opened my eyes. I've defended the 3ds games and say they're great because the developers tried many new things and never worked with 3D before. With this game, however, I can't defend it anymore. This game is a lazy cash-grab. No ifs, ands or buts. The 3ds games had problems but at least they had soul.

@Ralizah The "rushed" averages on HLTB for Gens VI and VII are 20 and 23 hrs respectively. So even, if they're rushing the game, it's still noticeably shorter then previous titles.

@Snaplocket TBH, the visuals have never even been my concern. Yes, I'd like them to be better, but if everything else was excellent, I would just laugh it off.

The problem comes when GF does stuff like cut the National Dex with the stated reason being to make the games better, but we still end up with OOT trees.

I expect I will get a 100+ hours out of it regardless of however long the story is. The meat and potatoes of the game for me is when I can properly breed and build a team.

@Harmonie You sure about Day/Night? That diorama website promotion specifically showed nighttime and Pokémon out during then.

@Galenmereth Same, easily my most anticipated game this year. With how great it looks so far, I have the feeling I’ll have a lot of games I haven’t got around to finishing yet go on the long-term backlog!

Harmonie

@Maelwolf What I read mentioned that certain areas "can have night". I'm not sure what exactly that means. Maybe there is a cycle in certain areas but not others?

@Harmonie
Nah, just bugs. One town has its day/night mismatched with all of the others, the Legendary Pokemon battle theme doesn’t play at all in the current version (dead silence), some things seem to freeze at times during certain actions. Sometimes Pokemon also pop out randomly in towns. Hopefully there will be a day one patch.

@-Juice- Man I know day one patches are standard these days but that kind of stuff just reeks of incompetence. Not everyone who buys it has an internet connection.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say leakers may not have access to actual release version? Keep in mind I haven't watched any leaks because I want to explore this game for myself, and make up my own mind.

There's no reason to suspect they aren't the release version. It'd actually be a lot of tougher to get hold of an unfinished copy of the game as that would be kept within Ninty themselves but most leaks like this come from review copies that are sent out.
