I don't know about you folks, but River City Ransom is one of my all-time favorite games in the beat'em up/brawler genre. Sure Double Dragon is the gold standard in the genre, but RCR added the rpg-like progression that I love so much. So I was happy so see that a collection of the Kunio-kun games is being released on the Switch. Although there hasn't been a confirmation of whether or not the games will support English, I was surprised to see that a few of the listed games are "overseas" versions, which suggests at least a partial translation for the collection.

I'll be keeping an eager eye on this release.

Yes indeed. I notice preorders are open on Amazon JP. The question is, do I want to spend $60 for just (potentially, though not confirmed) four English translated NES games and fourteen games that are Japanese-only? I mean, what are the chances that Arc System Works eventually localizes the whole package? Probably slim to none.

So in the end I probably will import this regardless.

To be honest you don't need to be able to read the Kunio games to enjoy them. I think the most language intense one would be River City Ransom (or Street Gangs for our Eurpoean friends) with the different items for sale and what not. Most of them are just sports games with over exaggerated rules.

That being said I am disappointed that there isn't a western release for this collection which means I need to figure out how to access the Japanese eShop on my Switch.

It takes about ten minutes. Create an email account, use that email for creating a Nintendo account with Japan as your country of origin, and take the necessary steps of linking both to a new Switch user ID. Done. However, the Japanese eShop currency? I wouldn't know the best place to obtain that. Amazon JP I assume?

@Tasuki
ive been hoping this comes out in full english.
theres a few river city ransom style games in the collection that may cause people trouble reading in japanese.

Bought it on Amazon Japan because a guy who works with me lives in Japan part of the year, and he was there on December, so he was able to receive both Capcom Beat'em Up Bundle and Kunio-kun World Classics Collection for me, free delivery. And he brings them to the office tomorrow. I can't wait.

Kunio-kun ended up being a little too expensive for what it is, after all classics collections are usually cheaper no matter the amount of games included, but considering I've always been attracted to this series, and the fact that this is the biggest collection of Kunio-kuns as of now -too bad it doesn't come with arcade versions too-, besting the previous on 3DS -a system which isn't region free-, I can't complain too much.

@Moroboshi876 I ordered mine from eBay and should be getting in within a week or so. I am extremely excited for this compilation, especially for the fact you can play any of the games online! Although I am reading that the online is currently lacking players, hopefully as people like us import it and the word goes around.. this will change

I'm just waiting for my copy to arrive via snailmail from Hong Kong.

I probably won't have it until next month.

Meanwhile, looks like a new current-gen Kunio-kun game is coming soon.

@Magician There were also 3DS outings, but they were digital only in Europe, so I took a pass.

It's funny how China and the surroundings get some Kunio-kun products we don't. I found out minutes ago that Kunio-kun The World Classics Collection is available digitally on Xbox One too, but only in Hong Kong.

@Magician To me RCR is way better than Double Dragon. The game even manages to be a better co-op experience than most games these days.

@Moroboshi876 It' a shame about the digital only format, specially becaue both Tokyo Rumble and Rival Showdown are two of the best games in the series. I only managed to grab Rival Showdown for cheap on physical since Tokyo Rumble is quite expensive, but I would really recommend to get them on digital if that's the only way you can play them.

Always enjoyed the Kunio games and really wish they would bring that collection to NA.

@roy130390 Yes, I'm not giving up, I'll buy them as soon as they get heavily discounted. But their starting price is 30€, so they usually do 50% tops, which is still 15 per game. Too much for a 3DS digital game.

Anyway the reviews weren't so good.

I regret not buying River City Soccer Hooligans, which was released in America, for Nintendo DS, when I was in Japan back in 2016. I saw it for about 250 yens, but I thought I didn't need a remake of Nintendo World Cup. Now I would like to have it.

American fans of the series are lucky that some games made the States...

Sold out at Play-Asia, unfortunately.

The good news is that English support is included on the cartridge (though most of the games themselves may be Japanese only), and the Asian version's packaging includes English text. If it is restocked, I'm keen on importing the Asian edition.

@Silly_G It will be restocked for sure. I got lucky having a friend there that bought it for me on Amazon without shipping costs at all, but I didn't know it had English support. The problem is if some game is a little heavy on text I'll suffer, because I can deal with Japanese to a certain extent, but not if text keeps changing. I'm not that fast.

@Moroboshi876 Yeah, I have seen them on discount once or twice a year. Reviews of those games are rarely good, and normally when I read about them I notice that the reviewer doesn't seem to get the game at all so personally I wouldn't use them as a reliable source in this case. The only major flaw that I found on both was that Tokyo Rumble has multiplayer limited to pvp battles and Rival Showdown seems to have a terrible performance if you try to play co-op in the story.

@roy130390 Yes, but not enough. As I said, their starting price is steep. But with this collection I can see the series itself isn't cheap. I haven't paid so much for SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and others. And I didn't have to pay shipping, but still this collection cost me about 40 euros.
