That's an interesting read. Made me consider getting it. The developer mentions in the interview that he previously made a River City fan game. So its definitely inspired by it.
@SKTTR I don't think either game has a direct connection, but The friends of Ringo Ishikawa is definitely sort of a love letter to those games.
Punch Club has a lot of video game and pop culture references in it. I've only played it a little bit, so I don't know if there are any direct references to Kunio-kun, but gameplay-wise, it is not really like a Kunio-kun game at all. It's a straight simulation game. You don't even really fight in the fights, the computer just simulates the fight based on your stats and skills.
It's kind of a bummer that most Arc System Works titles never go on sale. There are a decent chunk of games from their catalog that I'm interested in, but I always end up getting enticed by other games on sale instead.
I'm holding on buying the translated collection digitally with the hope that LRG will deliver a physical copy as they did with River City Girls.

Double Dragon & Kunio-kun: Retro Brawler Bundle is marked down 74% on the Murican eShop. I'm not sure when or even if Limited Run will opt this for a physical release, so I suppose now's the time to buy.
That was a $10 bill that wasn't difficult to let go of.
