Has anyone with the game figured out the best way to get people together to play online? I had posted a FB group's name that was created for that purpose but was perceived as spam so I won't post the name of the group.. but I do find it near impossible to find players online.

I guess a collection like this, released in Japan only (and not even digitally available in the West) shrinks the chance to play online. Maybe trying at hours that Japanese players tend to play (I don't know which they are), but anyway, it would be luck, because there are 19 games in this collection!

@Moroboshi876 I think you're right about the lower chances to find a Japanese opponent. The good thing about the online feature of this collection is that if I start a room in any game, someone could simply use "Quick Play" and find my room without specifying the game. I found a small fan base in Poland, of all places, that are actively playing. But being Canadian I'm facing the same timezone issue!

I also wish the Nintendo Entertainment System Online wouldn't be Friends-only and I've never once seen any of my 'friends' play, let alone play Online.

Having these games available to play Online is amazing.. but only if you have someone to play with.

@Anarchatheos That is a great feature that should be availabe in more games, or in NES Online itself!

Too bad it's not a collection that is going to reach a wide audience in the West.

(I don't play online almost never, and agreeing with friends on a time to play online together seems to be more difficult than it should, so I'm not really an online player, but still applaud these efforts)

A new Kunio-kun game is open to preorder at Play-Asia. River City Melee Mach, a competitive multiplayer game, basically Kunio-kun's version of Smash Bros. Between the World Classics Collection, River City Girls, and now Melee Mach I'm happy to see this series get as much attention as it has recently.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,247 games (as of April 15th, 2024)

@Magician I didn't know it was coming to Switch. I think there were fighting games in the series already, though. Let's see if it's any good and if it comes to the West eventually. Its price is very low, which is not a good signal, but with shipping from Asia it skyrockets.

Evidence of a fully translated western release of the Kunio-kun World Classics Collection is making the rounds. Although I already have the physical release in my collection, most of the games are not translated. I think I could be convinced to double-dip on a fully translated release, even if it were a digital-only western release.

Great news for those who don't have it already. Let me think it won't get physical treatment, though.

I won't feel bad about already having it unless they add new games like the ones on the SNES and Game Boy, which would make me angry.

I've preordered the collection. Looking forward to playing the football games. I've got good memories of nintendo world cup. Has anyone ever played the neogeo version of Super Dodgeball.

I remember playing it in Tenerife or Ibiza as a kid. I wish they'd rerelease it. It's completely different to the NES version.

Here, I have a list of Kunio-kun Games on Switch, if you're a fan or if you want to get into the series:

343 MB - Double Dragon & Kunio-kun - Retro Brawler Bundle (Arc System Works)
This is the essentials, all the 18 originals in one pack, translated from Japan for the first time.

These are new games in the series made for Switch:
3,9 GB - River City Girls (WayForward)
798 MB - Stay Cool, Kobayashi-san! - A River City Ransom Story (Arc System Works)
474 MB - River City Melee Mach!! (Arc System Works)
1,0 GB - Double Dragon IV (Arc System Works)

These are the original arcade versions:
78 MB - [Arcade Archives] Renegade (Hamster)
77 MB - [Arcade Archives] Double Dragon (Hamster)
70 MB - [Arcade Archives] Double Dragon II: The Revenge (Hamster)

56 MB - Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online has
1 - Double Dragon (NES)
2 - Double Dragon II: The Revenge (NES)
3 - River City Ransom (NES)
4 - Super Dodge Ball (NES)

And last but not least the fighting game of all time also has 4 Kunio-kun spirits:
13,6 GB - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo)

Did I miss something?

Ah, yes why is Code Shifter not in my eShop?? Thanks for the heads up, Wargoose and klingki!

Good list, you missed Code Shifter, but apparently that's not very good. For anyone new to the series, I can't recommend River City Girls enough. If you like that, and want more get the 18 game collection. It's pretty good value, and includes pretty much all the classics.

klingki

@SKTTR While it's not officially a Kunio-kun game, that new game Code Shifter (Arc System Works) has some pretty direct references.

EDIT: Ah, beaten to it!

I'm happy with my Asia-import Kunio-kun Collection with includes English cover art as well.

I'll only double dip on the Western version if there is a physical release, otherwise I'll just stick with what I have.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

@Wargoose I did last summer, in a multirom cart on a real Neo Geo AES. It was really funny and with superb graphics, and yes, gameplay-wise it's very different from the NES and arcade versions. Unfortunately it's not going to be released on Switch, with Hamster not releasing ACA Neo Geo games anymore.

But the arcade version of Super Dodge Ball could be released if they wanted to, because Arcade Archives Super Dodge Ball is available on PS4.

Watchman

Melee Mach is good fun, but I wish there were a way to save a game of story mode.

Watchman

@Watchman

I'd love it if arc system works did a 3d version, with transforming levels. I basically want 'Power Stone 3 a River City Story'.

Top tip theres an option in melee mach, to change the message speed to instant. It gets rid of the really annoying sound effect, that accompanies the story bits.

Has The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa anything to do with Kunio-kun / River City?
The game/demo felt a lot like River City Ransom.
Punch Club seems to be inspired as well.
