Topic: How should next gen Pokemon games look?

Well if TPC designed the areas for an over the shoulder camera and went with that, they wouldn't have to switch to a new area every time a battle starts. You could just... throw Pokeballs out in the middle of town and duel, all the environments you need would already be right there.

I don't know what not having a top down camera would be pushing. Games? Past the year 2000?

@Hitokage1 No, gen 1 and 2 didn't work like that, but you could max out every EV, even at level hundred, so if you won enough battles, all Pokemon of the same species would become equal in stats. But that brings back my point of homogenisation, what's the point if every Pokemon is the same? There's strategy in training a Pokemon the way you want it to be. Battles would become quite predictable if you knew the exact stats of your opponent.

This is so important! One of the most interesting aspects of Pokémon is EV distribution. IVs are mostly the same anyways, and I wouldn't be overly upset if they became even easier to max, but EVs are really important when it comes to the strategy of your team. You need your Golem to take a few extra hits across the board? Invest in HP, it's biggest threats are Special Attackers? Well, invest in Special Defense. What? You want a fast Golem? Not gonna happen, but sure, invest in Speed.

It makes your opponents less predictable and that makes it all the more fun. EVs doesn't really matter unless you play competitively, and any competitive player would agree that EVs are an important part of the strategy. Although they could of course make them even easier to manipulate.

@Haru17 That won't happen unless every area is designed with space for battles in mind; i.e. large open empty spaces with no trees that could potentially block your view during battle. Caves have to be build like large open rooms, etc.

@AlliMeadow It's already pretty easy to be honest. The first 100 EVs can easily be obtained using items (HP Up, Protein, Iron, etc.). Then there are potentially 152 EVs left for a single stat. The power items add 8 EVs for their respective stats, so defeating a Machoke while holding a Power Bracer give you 10 Attack EVs. That's 16 Machoke for a maxed stat (and that's without PokeRUS). They could make the items a bit cheaper, but it doesn't take long at all if you know what you're doing. EV training already got easier with every entry.

@Octane yeah, I'm not complaining at all, EV training in Sun and Moon is a breeze.

This has bugged me in SM so much. Why can't I control the camera? Pretty much any other game of its kind allows for that but TPC and Game Freak are just too stubborn to change anything in a meaningful way. I'd suggest they go the BotW route and make it more explorative and open world, with levels of wild Pokemon rise as the player receives more badges, but lord knows this will never happen with these two at the helms.

To be fair, they've only been working with one analog stick and didn't really have the button space to add a camera control button. They could've implemented an optional one as a feature of the New 3DS, which I thought they would, but evidently they're not ready for that yet. On the Switch though, there's less excuse. They have two analog sticks so they're perfectly capable of implementing a camera control system.

@GoldenGamer88 How is a controllable camera in a Pokemon game meaningful in any way?

It helps open up the map design to be less linear and full of more secrets and hidden paths and is generally more useful towards a more open world feeling game. There's a reason why 3D Land and 3D World didn't have a controllable camera, because they were linear games and you didn't really have a choice of the path ahead, so Nintendo just gave you an optimal camera angle for the path that was dictated. In a more open world experience, they can't do this. The player can choose where to go and so they need a controllable camera to allow players to see what's going on in whatever direction they choose since it may not be the direction the developer would want them to go.

@Octane Ah yes trees, the impassable barrier

They could just emulate Colosseum and have a low angle camera that rotates around the outside of the battle space. And of course they control where battles happen with NPC placement, so I don't think it would be too great a hurdle. Certainly far less so than creating all the new models that they'll have to and unique battle areas that couldn't use 2D facades anymore since they'll be HD.

I think that a more visual appealing black and white style would be pretty good on the 3ds or switch.

Octane

@Haru17 Yeah, but Colosseum's battles also took place in separate areas. One moment you're in a small corridor, a trainer challenges you and you get transported to a large open room. I think it will be too restrictive if battles take place in the actual environment you're in. Like I said, what would happen if you encounter a Pokemon when you're standing next to a couple of trees, would they be placed awkwardly on the battle field right beside you? What about caves or buildings? I think what you're suggesting is way more complicated than what they did with Colosseum/XD or any of the other Pokemon games.

Haru17

@Octane They could still make cutaways when they needed to. But when I'm out on a beach and a Krabby walks up to me, don't make me suddenly warp into a generic alternate dimension beach to fight it. The nuance of being able to battle theoretically anywhere could make the game a ton more appealing.

They also have to make the trainer battles themselves more dynamic. Like, give every NPC a Pokemon set and an option to battle, perhaps even locked behind a side quest or trade. And allow rematches so the world doesn't feel spent after you beat the Elite 4.

@Haru17 I agree what you're saying, but for the sake of consistency, I don't mind the separate room battles.

Would be neat if in-game trades were a bigger deal, and side quests too (I don't think we even had those at all). If the game itself was less focused on story (i.e. less hand-holding, talking and tutorials), I wouldn't mind some side quests that reward you with some cool items or maybe even a Pokemon, or a battle.

Anti-Matter

1. Cute 3D HD, like Pokken.
2. Open World style, like Breath of the Wild
3. No Random Battles, you can see Wild Pokemons directly.
4. More gorgeous Buildings for each Routes.
5. Shirtless option for Boy Main Character (We got a Shirtless guy as Opponent in Pokemon Sun / Moon near of Beach area)

... You do realize that the main character/s are often depicted as 10 year old children, right?

Never take anything I say seriously. S'all you buddy. ;)

To answer the question: full on retro demake of the originals as if they'd been made on a ZX Spectrum in 1981. To tie in (and explain why the graphics were like that) I'd make the game a prequel surrounding the rise of team Rocket.

At the end there'd be a shocking plot twist... Your nameless character is given the nickname 'Giovanni' and... embraces it...

You'd be able to finally understand the unanswered questions that everyone has desperately wondered about ever since the first game was released.

  • See the story of how Bill creates his computer system unfold.
  • Discover the surprising secret behind just who was driving the truck and how it came to be parked on top of Mew.
  • Witness just what happened in Lavender town...

These ideas actually sound great to me I'd rather have a prequel with an interesting story than yet another remake that's for sure.

How should they look? Nice.

Keep doing the regular rpg thing, make it look nicer. Add more post game. Etc.

@ThatNyteDaez I doubt that bothers him at all. The less we talk about it, the better.

To keep things fair, a shirtless option could also be available for the female main character. On a related note, it could be great to play as an older character this time, maybe have 18 year old protagonists.

Next gen should look like Pokken. I'm kidding mostly but I would like to see something approaching that level detail.

Yeeeaaah, I don't think we should be doing the former without the latter.
