That doesn't mean they're making their own mobile device, just that there's going to be several of them. For Nintendo to successfully compete with iOS, they can't limit themselves to dedicated gaming hardware, which is something they seem unwilling to break away from.

The Wii U could have brought back casual gamers with it's touchscreen/tablet interface,
but games like Sudoku, Picross, Poker, Chess, Tetris, Prof. Layton, a good farmsim, Big Brain Academy, Dr. Kawashima, a real Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, Style Boutique, and other cherry picks mom, dad, and the kids would enjoy came either too late, were overlooked old Virtual Console/WiiWare/Wii titles, or simply never happened.

Also Nintendo is a bit slow to pick up the huge blockbusters. Eventually Minecraft and Terraria hit the Wii U but that's years later. Time's are different. Nintendo can't expect to pick a 1985 Tetris and release it 1989 for much success, when other big fishes are in the same pond now and are much quicker to grab those gems.

That's why I think a hybrid system would be great: a homeconsole/handheld that would have all kinds of games (Wii/Wii U and DS/3DS running on it) and is not divided by software and fans. The Wii U turned into a hardcore gamer machine mostly, but then again, it unfortunately lacked big company 3rd party support and good advertisement.

The NX should make sure not to have only Zelda and Mario at launch, but something to draw in all the casuals as well: a variety of good-selling realistic-feeling sports, driving and action games, and all sorts of quality puzzle games, quiz games, card games, lifesims, and creative games such as Minecraft and Terraria. That's where the sales are. And that is precisely why the Wii U didn't sell. Games were too original, and sometimes too demanding. We've come to a point where innovation and exclusivity is only good for 10 million people, the other 90 million just want their Poker tournament game, a farmsim they can waste their time on endlessly, a match 3 jewel game that never ends, or driving around with awesome graphics and horribly realistic controls. New stuff is rarely appreciated, but better-looking old stuff is, and most people want to swim and share with the mainstream. I'm not one of them. I have my Wii U and am happy with it as my main gaming device, as I like just that spectrum of games (especially Nintendo first party and indie games). I can easily live and game without the casual mass market triple AAA shovelware.

And as somebody who has played games on iOS, that's the smart decision. Just because you have a whole ocean doesn't mean you'll always make out with a monster catch if everyone and their mother has their net in the water, dragging out everything and anything they can get their hands on, from swordfish to seaweed.

Didn't read the other entries but off the top of my head...if the casual market's all on mobile now...maybe a limited partnership with a mobile phone company, and produce a Controller-pad pro-type device that fits their phone and handshakes with the NX?
