@Professor_Plumber I can say with absolute certainty that you're going to adore it! Fantastic storyline/writing, inhumanely good animation and an extremely unique puzzle mechanic are all here and more; easiest recommendation of my entire life.

And as the cherry on top? It's only around 15 hours long!

I get the feeling that the illustrations you get from the slide panel puzzles are phone wallpapers made for the old mobile re-release of the game.

Rain Code has reignited my love for murder mystery.

I quickly grouped all games even tangentially related and realized there's a ton, so I looked into everything on Switch and coming in the near future:

  • Rain Code
  • Danganronpa
  • Danganronpa 2
  • Danganronpa v3
  • AI Somnium Files
  • AI Somnium Files Nirvana Initiative
  • Pheonix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
  • Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy
  • Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
  • Ghost Trick

And there's quite a bit of gameplay diversity there. Granted, the Ace Attorney games all play similar, as do the Danganronpa games, as do both AI Somnium File games, but even then you've still got Rain Code and Ghost Trick on top of that. At least 5 different styles spanning 15 individual games. That's incredible.

Haven't even had time for Ghost Trick yet but it's in my official backlog group now.

Easily.

Without question.

If you thought I was annoying about Ace Attorney before then HOOOOOOO BOY YOU BETTER PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR THE ABSOLUTE GUSHING I'M ABOUT TO GIVE THIS GAME ONCE I COLLECT MY THOUGHTS.

@Eel Yes and by god it's one of the best twists I've ever seen.

I've actually watched back a lot of the game through a longplay and god the sheer amount of foreshadowing towards Sissel being the cat is absurd, such him not being able to read, the large amount of mice present throughout the puzzles and (my personal favourite) the fact that you save exactly NINE LIVES throughout the game. Missile being the one who set all of this into motion caught me completely off-guard as well, turned a character I enjoyed but couldn't figure out why people were calling him the best one into one of my all-time favourites in fiction, he is undoubtedly the BEST boy.

so yeah I am hopelessly obsessed with another Takumi work once again (I didn't think it'd happen so soon after TGAA but life (or death in this case) finds a way I suppose XD)

@Fizza Glad you enjoyed the game! I figured you would, though your reaction has happily exceeded my own expectations lol. It's amazing how much foreshadowing there is, isn't it? So many things hit home when I just KNEW, even more so when I went back later and watched additional footage and references. Even before things got REALLY weird, I suspected Sissel's appearance wasn't all it was cracked up to be since Lynne very early on takes Cabanela's appearance when she dies.

I see we're also in agreement that Missile is the best boy.

By replaying this game, as I mentioned before, I also noticed that Sissel agrees with Lynne when she says she finds small tight spaces comfortable. Not only is this very cat-like of him, but it foreshadows his usual method of transportation as well! And it’s like, the tinies most minor of dialogue bits! Fairly early on, too.

Something I find very funny about Missile, is that his ghost grows old… even though it shouldn’t really age if he’s already dead. So he probably just saw himself how he felt: old and tired. Best boy no doubt.

About mice in the game, we do really abuse them a lot. Poor things. Sissel does apologize to them though.

Tanookduke

After randomly playing the demo for this game ( and loving it!) I pre-ordered it and hoped it would good enough to pass some time before pikmin 4 released.

It wasn't just good..

IT WAS FANTASTIC!!!

The story has so many twists and turns that its always a surprise what happens next! I loved it so much that I kept playing it until 2 am.
The characters are so unique and well written that it made me want to listen to everyone (including side characters), and it's helped by this games unique art direction.

And finally the music. Ohh the music! The new arrangements for each song are great and catchy! (No offense to the original songs, but the new arrangements wipe the floor with the MIDI- like originals.)

I am now a diehard fan of this game now. And I hope it sells well enough so we can get a sequel of some sort in the future!

The tanookduke strikes again!

Dogorilla

Just finished this game and you won't be surprised to hear I thought it was incredible. Not much left for me to say that others haven't already covered so I'll just say that (major spoilers, do not read if you haven't finished the game) 'the main character was a cat all along' is one of the best twists ever .

@Dogorilla I seriously cannot get over that final twist. It is so, so good.

Then there’s the final final twist, where Sissel is now an undead forever kitty (which you can actually notice, he used to be larger before the new timeline) with a piece of the meteorite stuck inside. Which is kinda tragic, and does open a way to a sequel in a way: he is now immortal and anyone who happens to die near him will gain powers.

@Eel One thing I was slightly confused about: is the reason Sissel doesn't age because he's a spirit possessing his own body like Yomiel did? I wasn't sure how that could work because Sissel's powers don't normally let him possess corpses, but I suppose in the new timeline he got Yomiel's powers instead when he was hit by the meteorite piece?

I would absolutely love a sequel, though it would probably have to have a different protagonist if Sissel doesn't have his original powers any more, not to mention that it would otherwise be impossible to advertise the game without spoiling the first one. But yeah, as you say, Sissel could be the source of a new character's powers.

@Dogorilla from what I understand, the meteorite keeps the body stuck in the moment it was meant to die, alive but stopped in time. Sissel probably can’t posses other bodies, but his own body is still the home of his soul.

For example, Yomiel’s body wasn’t really treated by the game as a dead body until the meteorite was removed and it finally died. Yomiel himself was probably not “possessing” his body, rather just returning to it.

@Dogorilla I'm overjoyed to see that you loved it! I still can't believe it not only managed to reach my personally astronomically high expectations, but absolutely SHATTER them in the process, absolutely phenomenal game

also I see you've gone in length about how much you love Sissel, but I might as well ask for your thoughts on the OTHER goodest boy in the game 🐶

@Eel Ohh yeah that sounds right. That's a nicer explanation anyway, it would be a bit macabre if Sissel lived on as a dead cat controlling himself like a puppet (a sentence I never thought I'd type).

@Fizza Yeah, I've been wanting to play this game since it originally came out on DS (I was a kid then so couldn't really buy every game I wanted, and it's become very expensive in recent years) and it turned out to be even better than I'd hoped! And Missile is SUCH a good boy!! I might set him as my profile picture next time I'm on my computer, it would be appropriate for the 'dog' part of my username I love Lynne as well, and honestly all the characters are great. Shu Takumi is a genius

I just finished this game a little bit ago and while it’s not my favorite game I’ve played this year, it’s WAY up there! I admit I’ve known my personal GOTY for months now, but had I not figured that out already, this probably would've been a huge contender. For what it’s trying to be and for what it is, this might be a genuinely perfect game. My only criticism is not having voice acting which isn't even a criticism given it was originally a DS game and effectively impossible as a result. The plot is stupid confusing but that’s honestly part of the appeal for me (though with time I might be able to understand it) and it wraps up shockingly well by the end with no major loose ends, while probably still having tons of room for theory-crafters. I went in knowing it would be good, but I wasn’t entirely sure if it would be $30 good, and I am happy to say my skepticism was unwarranted. I’m glad to say I’m joining the fandom!
also Missile is bestest boy, we already know that but just thought I’d put that out there
