Topic: Disappointed in the Switch version of Lethal League Blaze.

I've played Lethal League (the original, Blaze is a Turbo version) since it came out on Steam back in 2014. Then Blaze came out last year in October on Steam with new stages, characters, a cel shaded 3D style (the original game was just a 2D game with a comic book art style,) and there's even a track by the famous composer Hideki Naganuma who made tracks for the JetSetRadio games.

I was really excited to try out the demo of the Switch edition of the game, and eww...

When the screen zooms out, the frame rate drops, and this isn't really that much of a graphically advanced game either. If you can get 60FPS in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, why is it not achievable in the Switch version of LLB? Battles are typically played with the zoomed out camera, the only times when it zooms in is when you earn an item in the Item Targets, when a stage begins, and when your opponent gets hit by a really fast ball.

It's a shame that the game is choppy, this is coming from the fact that I can play the game in 120FPS with a 144hz screen on my PC. Granted, you're not going to achieve that with 60hz TVs, but I really wished that LLB was 60FPS all the time on the Switch, and I honestly can't see why it was a problem, unless the game wasn't optimised very well for the system. It would be interesting to see how the PS4 stacks up against the PC and Switch versions, but as a Lethal League fan, I'm not that happy with the Switch version, it could've been better.

Actually...

I'll, kinda, retract my statement there.

When I first tried out the game, I was playing it in portable mode, and it struck to me, what if I play this in TV-Mode?

Simply put, it's much more smoother than playing it in portable mode. Not too sure why the Switch needs the extra CPU power in docked mode to run this smoother when it's not graphically more advanced than Smash Ultimate. But I'll state that the Switch version of LLB runs much better in TV Mode than Portable Mode. Which is fine I guess, but I want a portable version of the game as I already own it on Steam.

Hi SepticLemon,

Unfortunately we were unable to reach 60fps everywhere in the game in this phase. We decided to lock the fps on 30 when it can't reach 60fps. Mainly for stability purposes. An inconsistent framerate is even worse than 30fps in our opinion. Nonetheless we are working hard to increase the performance of the game and eventually reach a stable 60 fps in a later patch.

Comparing the game from a small independent game company with just two programmers on (all 3) console ports with a first party game like Super Smash is almost never going to look pretty. We do agree though it should be possible to reach 60 fps and we will do our best to reach that!

I also do appreciate your second post and I hope you can still enjoy the game on the go!

Best,
Tim from Team Reptile

Ah ha, you're a member of Team Reptile huh?

Awesome to see you're a Nintendo Life user. It's good to see that you're working on a future patch for the game, even if I wish it was smooth to begin with. In honesty, I believe that all Fighting games need to run at 60+FPS, anything less than that is really jarring, not to mention that 30FPS when the ball starts to zip across the screen at insane speeds, it becomes hard to read the ball when you miss half the frames per second.

Once I'm aware of the new update, I'll get the Switch edition of the full game. But for the time being I'll be playing the PC version. But the idea of a portable Lethal League gets me excited!

Oh, another odd thing I noticed is that the game runs at 30FPS in menu screens. Not that's a huge problem, but a very odd choice to make, unless there's a reason for it only to run at 60FPS during battle in TV mode.

Yes sir! https://twitter.com/RemmersTim

In that case I have an easy fix. Let's call it a party game instead of a fighting game!
As mentioned before we'll do whatever we can to push those 60fps.

Eh...

It's a fighting game, like how Smash Bros is a fighting game, but it's not direct combat, it's indirect with a killer baseball! lol! But it's still a fighting game. It's a Smash Bros clone that used Pong as a construct and than began to make its own rules to make it really unique.

Oh! Quick question?

Will there ever be a physical release in the future?

The smaller the team and project the more important that first impressions are good! Just my two cents.

This man really out here trying to lecture the dude who created the game on why his game is actually a fighting game and teaching him that it's indirect combat like he was sitting there making the game for years but didn't actually know it's a fighting game with a unique twist lmfao smh

I looked this up as I was also kinda bummed that it ran at 30fps. However, running it in dock mostly fixed it for me as it was running at 60fps nearly 100% of the time. First game I see to have such a stark difference between handheld and docked. But I'm not complaining since the main way I'll be playing is couch multiplayer so it's great that it runs smooth there.

120frames-please

This is an awesome thread! I'm glad to find out Lethal League runs at 60fps in docked mode, and hopefully at 60fps in handheld after a future update! Even if it's really low resolution I hope an option to switch to high frame rate/low resolution is added so that handheld gameplay can be smooth at 60fps. That's my single favorite feature of Switch games that feature it. I LOVE Darksiders, Fire Emblem Warriors, Unravel 2, etc because they have a menu option for playing at 60fps (I know two of those games only play smoothly in docked...).

It runs pretty stable in docked mode for me most the time except for on the new rise district stage, always gets super choppy there for some reason. Same with the fiery version of paradise field against boss doombox

@SepticLemon Sounds like they didn't put as much effort into the port as they could have. Also keep in mind that it is easier to make a game run at its best on the device it is initially designed for. SSBU was designed for Switch from the ground up - but this game was ported from another platform.

@Heavyarms55 That is true. Maybe they need a bit more time to optimise the game to make it work better with the Tegra architecture. It's was just a shame to see the game run not so great in portable mode. But I'm following TRTim's twitter account, and the day an update to fix it comes out, I'll be getting the game!

Fired this up for half an hour today. Quite a thrilling twist on the fighter genre. I'm not sure if there's much reason to play solo beyond unlocking everything. But I could see this as an awesome local versus game.
