Of course it can. Scorpio is powerful, but it'll come with a hefty price tag, the real question is, can it compete against the XOne S? Still, if Nintendo markets and prices the NX accordingly, they have a chance. The power isn't the biggest problem, marketing and price are (and games of course).
These threads are what make E3 special for me. Let's debate the merits and cons of two systems, one we know barely anything about and the other we know absolutely nothing substantial about.
E3 y'all. Get your fill of buzzwords, pre-orders and CGI trailers and you better like it!
wow, just read about project scorpio and there it is, a new thread :)
Things is though, you are spot on. This is a serious problem IMHO.
When I first read that nintendo is gonna produce a new console - I was wondering where it would fit in, above, in between, or below, xbox one and ps4. Wondering if anyone would be interested in buying a new nintendo console, which traditionally would be overpowerded, not in comparison with the wii u but the competition.
The news that microsoft is bringing out some serious machine, with about 6 terraflops, wow. I am not a graphics luvvie, and chances are, I am not gonna buy it, at all. But in regard to the Nx overall mainstream succes, this will be a problem, same as the wii u - again nintendo will be faced with either lack of third parties, or getting the worst versions of multiplatform titles. One way or the other, its not good.
I dont think NX can compete on a technical level, I wonder if Sony will be able to pull off a stunt.
The question is, will nintendo games be good enough to warrant some sales?
Will Zelda U save nintendo from its impending danger?
Nintendo should do some serious thinking, they failed with the Wii U, they are way behind their competition in many regards, they have been to arrogant to acknowledge their market position, they have been neglecting their fan base for much too long. I wonder where this may lead. It would be a pity if the NX would be nintendos last console.
We don't even know anything about the NX. I don't think we can really compare the two at the moment. Why don't we wait until we actually get more info, okay?
@Andrzej777 Anything that's coming to Scorpio will also be release on XOne. As long as the NX can run XOne games, there shouldn't be a problem.
Thats not the point here and please, dont get me wrong, its not about what the xbox will do, and its not about the games the xbox will play. Its about the technological prowess, which shallow gamers, and even hardcore games will invest in.
I mean, why are you gonna buy a Nintendo NX? Me, because I want to play nintendo games! If theres interesting third party support, even better, I might try a game or two (hope they will port Manking Divided).
But for people, who have been playing Xbox or PS for years, what kind of an incentive will there be to buy an Nx? Of course, we dont know too much about the NX yet as to make any kinds of judgments. But this is nintendo, they are know for cheaping out, and with the NX I believe they are just somewhere in the vicinity of xbox one and ps4, maybe even in between. So when they will be ready to launch their new hi tech console, others will be moving on and history will repeat.
My worries are, that nintendo will abandon the hardware sector after the NX, realising that its over. I mean, why did they start with mobile games? They realized that the days of portable consoles are gone. One day they might realize that the days of Nintendo consoles are gone. And this is what I wouldnt really wanna see.
Of course it can. Scorpio is powerful, but it'll come with a hefty price tag, the real question is, can it compete against the XOne S? Still, if Nintendo markets and prices the NX accordingly, they have a chance. The power isn't the biggest problem, marketing and price are (and games of course).
If that is the problem, then why does Nintendo have a hard time with third parties then?
I'll tell you once I get more Plutonium. Only got enough for one more trip, and I'm not sure if I should go backwards in time to get more, or jump forwards 3000 years and catch the next flight to Neo-Pluto...can't quite remember whether or not their security was better than the Soviet's...
We don't even know anything about the NX. I don't think we can really compare the two at the moment. Why don't we wait until we actually get more info, okay?
The problem is that there is noway NX will support 4K because then otherwise, it'd be as expensive as Scorpio.
I get that its too early, but Nintendo winning the next gen is slimmer the more I hear how powerful the competitors are compared to Nintendo.
If anything I'm surprised about how right I was about what Microsoft's changed strategy was. Though exactly how powerful Project Scorpio is took everyone by surprise. It probably shouldn't have given the recent announcements from AMD and NVidia of how much of a jump their next-gen GPUs are taking. But still, the fact that they're pushing more of an Apple-style hardware cycle? Not surprising. The fact that they're folding XBox into Windows 10? Not surprising.
FYI, this is what a 6TFLOP GPU is capable of:
What does this mean for Nintendo and the NX? I don't think it screws them over like the OP seems to be suggesting. You know all the freakout about how the NX will manage launching mid-generation? Well, we now have it confirmed it's going to be just one of three. Everyone is releasing a new piece of hardware mid-cycle. And of the three Nintendo is launching right in the middle of it.
I wouldn't be suprised of AMD and NVidia tapped all three on the shoulders and said "hey guys, we're releasing new GPUs around 2016 that are quite a leap. Do you guys want to use them in any of your products?" And then all three saw the specs, the thermals and the price and went for it.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"
@skywake What does that have to do with the lack of power that Nintendo simply can't compete against?
It doesn't matter when the hardware is released as we clearly saw that despite the head start the Wii U had, it failed to beat either the PS4 or Xbox One.
