Escape from Monkey Island... totally missed the point of the older games, and the whole GRIMM engine instead of the SCUMM interface just blew majorly. The game has shaken my faith in the series so much (It's my fav series ever) that I have yet plucked up enough courage to download the new one onto wiiware...
Didn't Donkey Kong 3 get a bad rap, just because Mario wasn't in it? I rather enjoy it. And I think the main character, Stanley, was supposed to have been Nintendo's mascot before the big Mario explosion. I know he was in a couple of Game and Watch series before DK3, like Greenhouse.
So many people I agree with here. @VGP I also prefer SMB2 over SMB1 and SMB3 @Badknux I was equally disappointed with Super Mario Galaxy, and I don't understand its hype. It's a good game, but that's about it. SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE WAS, AND IS, AMAZING. Let's not forget Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. While it was generally well-received, a lot of people hated the light/dark thing, and the fact that you now have beam ammo. I thought the second was better than the first. Resident Evil 0. A great game, and I thought I didn't like Resident Evil before I played this. Now I'm compelled to go try the first one again. Star Fox Adventures. One of the first games I had for the GCN, and a great game at that. I guess people went into it expecting space battles, and got something different, but what we got was still amazing, so I don't understand the hate. Twilight Princess. I thought everyone liked this game until I started posting on this forum. It's not my favorite, but it's still one of the best games I've played in a long time.
I thought everyone liked SMG, but I was brutally wrong! I had no idea I was the only person on this site that likes that game. It's the most epic game I have played in a long time. People just can't understand how fantastic it is.

Are you kidding me? Theres only like 2 people on the site that don't like it.
Devil May Cry 2 and Sonic '06. And this is off topic, but I loved Luigi's Mansion. I don't really hear a lot of people praise that, not like Super Mario Galaxy anyway (which I thought was a slapped together mess).
Im going to have to disagree and say that Sonic 06 deserved all the hate it got. That game sucked, even without the bad voice acting and all the glitches.

That's not true. EVERYONE loved Super Mario Galaxy. I'm in the 2% that was disappointed with it.
Since I've already stated I feel Sunshine was a crappy game, I'll instead point out that since it wasn't even a sequel I'm not sure why it is in this thread.
The games I have played that usually I hear mentioned as being inferior to their predecessors by others (not saying these are bad games, some are extremely good but just get hate on... and some are just terrible):
Devil May Cry 2 (actually terrible) Metroid Prime 2: Echoes The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Castlevania: Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness (both alright games, especially compared to the N64 games) Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (decent game on it's own, bad compared to The Sands of Time/Two Thrones) Unreal Tournament III (actually terrible) Starfox Adventures Starfox Assault Deus Ex: Invisible War (horrible) Wild Arms 2 Final Fantasy VIII and XII Final Fantasy X-2 (pretty bad) Legend of Mana Dreamfall: The Longest Journey Pefect Dark Zero (horrible) Chrono Cross (mainly just because of Chrono Trigger) Metal Gear Solid 2 (Raiden...) Zelda II: The Adventure of Link Metroid II Mega Man VII Mega Man X6
I think Super Mario Galaxy is a good game, though I've far to get into it. I guess the reason people feel Super Mario Sunshine to be the sequel to Super Mario 64 is because it kinda almost plays equally. I'm probably the only living being to actually like Space Harrier II, even though I haven't played Space Harrier I. Streets of Rage 3 is a challenging title (the US version), but a good beat'em up nonetheless.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star - It's not my favorite Mario RPG, and not even in my top 5 3DS games, but despite all that, I still enjoyed it, and appreciate it for trying something new.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
Sequels with a bad rap? Donkey Kong 64 ends this discussion.
....oh, right, "rap" as in "reputation"? Well, in that case, Zelda II. I love it. And Mega Man X6. I will probably never understand how people can possibly not like it. A great game from top to bottom.
