Sony is creating a software platform for Android called PlayStation Suite, and they made a PlayStation-branded phone called Xperia Play (which also uses Android), yet they are still making the PS Vita.
So if Sony can support Android AND their own hardware, can't Nintendo do it too?
well nintendo is primarily a game company. where as SOny is an electronics company. they dont make just games, i mean have you ever seen a nintendo TV? i think that nintendo should stick to what they do best and stay away from the teritory already dominated by the enemy. they should cantinue to explore new teritory, it workied in the past and hopefully it will continue

I understand your point, but the reason Sony's PlayStation division is supporting Android is because they see a large potential market, and they want to capitalize on that.

The way capitalism works means that sticking to that strategy you've suggested above would likely bankrupt Nintendo rather than see it successful.
Everyone seems to instantly dismiss the notion of Nintendo doing this, but I can't see why they shouldn't make some stuff for the iOS or Android markets. They don't have to be full-out Mario and Zelda games even actual "games", but you can bet people would buy Nintendo apps if done correctly (or even incorrectly, for that matter). It certainly wouldn't harm their handheld business if they use the right approach.

Can't you see that there is room for 2 portable devices? Smartphones, iPods, and tablets are here to stay, but they won't completely demolish handheld systems. The DS is still very popular, the 3DS just needed a little push, and it got one with the price cut (and upcoming games). Price is a huge factor in the success of a game system, as well as games.
There is room for more than one device. Did cars kill off the motorcycle industry? Did microwaves kill off the oven? Did 3D games kill off 2D games?

This. Sony is doing just that with their PlayStation Suite for Android. They aren't giving up on their handhelds either. The PS Vita will coexist with Sony's Android software. Sony sees the potential of a huge market with Android, and they are going to capitalize on that. If Nintendo did the same, then they would be making even more money than they do now.
Iwata seems to think they have to sacrifice their handheld division to make iOS games. They can do both.

It's good to see I'm not the only one who thinks this. Like it or not there is a huge market for small games on the iPhone and Nintendo could benefit by releasing smaller-scale games on those phones and devices

Would they be able to successfully balance 2 platforms (handhelds and smartphone apps)? Or would their handheld division suffer? I think this is what Iwata is afraid of. He thinks that if Nintendo gets involved in the smartphone app business, that they will have to stop making handhelds since that market won't be as lucrative anymore.
Nintendo's main business is hardware and games. If they have to stop making hardware, then that's a lot of money they are missing out on.

Not at all. Make apps like a Pokedex for smartphones and continue making their handhelds. Keep their big games on the 3DS and future handhelds. Why do they have to choose in the first place?
Another idea is to have third parties become second parties and have them develop games for the platforms

Yeah, why Nintendo hasn't acquired some smartphone developers and publishers truly boggles my mind.

That's actually a good idea, but again, Iwata seems to be afraid that pursuing that will make their handheld business suffer.
Customers might think "I can get a Nintendo game on my iPod, why buy it on the 3DS?"
But that's why Nintendo needs to educate to customers that their apps are just bite-size experiences. To get the full experience, you need a 3DS (or whatever they make at the time). This is what Sony is doing, and for once I think they've made a brilliant decision.
I highly doubt Nintendo would do anything for Android, IOS, etc. And to be honest I highly doubt seeing them going bankrupt over not doing this in the near future either.

Microsoft recently hopped on the smartphone bandwagon with their own OS (Windows Phone 7). WP7 hardly gets any support, so should they just give up on it?

I was just making a point. He was talking about the chances of Nintendo going bankrupt if they don't make iOS/Android games. Microsoft just recently started making smartphone software, yet they did just fine before they entered that market. So Nintendo can survive without being part of that market too.
