Topic: Something odd about the Zelda series

Has anyone else noticed that, dispite having the longest timespan in gaming, there has been literally NO technological progress in the Zelda universe? The only things I can think of are the trains in ST. I don't really see how that's possible.

Well they uh, invented the... Um... Spinner? And one wise guy eventually figured out he could tie a bomb to an arrow. And Majora's mask has speaker systems, fans, mailmen, and some sort of liquid dispensing unit in the milk bar.

True, but you'd think they'd get a bit farther after that much time.

Technological advance is exponential. Cleopatra's reign was closer to present day than it was to the construction of the pyramids.

It took ~5,000-6,000 years after the invention of the wheel to invent the automobile.
It took 60 years after the first manned flight to put a man on the moon.

Well there were robots in Skyward Sword, it's just tech seemingly then went backwards.

Of course, it's likely really because changing the series to have a more modern setting or advanced technology would lose quite a bit of its appeal to people.

I'd dig a Steampunk Zelda game.

Easy: Timeline distortion.WW's Hyrule flooded, TP's didn't. The Hylians of WW adapted their bodies to retain more water, shrinking them in the process. Or something XD

It goes with the motif og this being a legend regardless of progress. Also out of the three timelines we have seen some progress.

-Spirt Tracks has the train system
-The game following Twilight Princess had a cross bow
-A link to the past 2 is probably the worst offender.

Technology exists in the Zelda universe given those games and skyward sword which went with the Magic=technology explanation. The easy way to describe it is based on events in these universes the progress is lost. I wouldn't mind a steampunk Zelda though.

Who needs machine guns and plasma swords when you have a good old fashioned sword and shield? Problem with Zelda games is that they lose appeal if the game starts introducing technology. Besides, it needs that traditional, timeless sword, shield and bows... if it went too far ahead with technology, it just wouldn't be Zelda.

couldn't agree more, who the hell wants to ruin a game like zelda with technology, gosh

If you think about it, there was more technology in the distant past of skyward sword than in the distant future of spirit tracks lol

If you wanna know my in-universe theory... It's the goddesses. People rely a lot in religion and magic in these games, what happens when people only need to ask to a higher being for everything they need?

Nothing advances.

My realistic theory?

It's a game. The style works.

The problem is you assume its going to mean future Zelda. You can keep a mostly traditional setting and have technology slowly advance. Fable II did it pretty wellm keeping a mix between the two. (Fable III on the other hand went two far into the industrial revolution for my taste.
