Topic: Retailers selling games too early

Some retailers sell games earlier than the official release dates (e.g. I got Tatsunoko VS. Capcom one day before it was officially released)
Are they allowed to do this?
If not, is there some kind of punishment if they do it anyways?

No, they're not supposed to sell them early. They can be fined, but usually nothing much happens.

It can seriously harm retailers' relationships with publishers and suppliers. FFXIII had a very strict street date that was broken by several UK stores (including CEX) and I would assume they would see consequences for such a serious breach of contract.

I bought Rabbids Go Home two days earlier than the release date from Gamestop, but they really stick to the gaming schedule given.
