Hey, I just noticed that Redbox supports Blu-ray now. 50¢ more than DVDs.

Kinda random, but I might actually use it now.

@zez Oh ok. xD

@BedCommando I think I already confirmed we agree about CDs for the purpose of music.

Anyone who thinks Blu-ray is the only format that can support HD resolutions is stupid. Of course DVDs can handle HD resolutions, but video of that size on a DVD won't have nearly as long a play time as Blu-ray thanks to HD video's larger file size requirements. That makes DVDs rather impractical for HD film since they would have to span multiple DVDs - much like the VCDs of the 90s, you'd have to swap them out in the middle of a film to continue watching.

As for the PC market, DVDs are the standard because everyone has DVD players in their computers. Once Blu-ray players drop in price enough, people will get those instead. They are backwards-compatible with DVDs and CDs so no one will be missing out. It may be some time before they are universally accepted but it will happen eventually, just like DVD players were universally accepted as a PC standard quite a number of years after their initial release.

Really we could just compare the DVD/Blu-ray jump to the CD/DVD jump ~10 years ago. The situation is about the same.

Well, one particularly nice thing about digital distribution is that we don't have to worry about storage capacity at all.

I think Cds and Dvds will be around for a while longer. Even if sales of CDs continue to drop (album sales have already dropped 22% this year) there are always people who are going to prefer digital media. With companies releasing Blu-ray/Dvd combo packs I doubt dvd will go away any time soon.

Most local bands I know of aren't even really using CDs anymore. Why bother when you can reach a much larger audience online? Every band or artist I know has their music up on their myspace pages (really the only decent use for myspace imho), and there are plenty of sites and distributers for indie music online. Back in the day before it got sued, it was the indie bands who were really embracing Napster, because it was an easy way for them to distribute their music to a much broader audience. MIA is one example of someone who made a name for herself, because her music got popular online.

Like it or not, digital isn't the future of music, it's the present. I doubt CDs will ever completely disappear, because they will be collectors' items for fans and there's always the subset of the population that prefers physical media over digital. Heck, there are still vinyl records out there, because some audiophiles prefer the sound of analog. It's not like it's difficult to rip a cd onto your ipod for the convenience of digital, so you can get the best of both worlds.

I've completely stopped buying CDs for music, I just get everything on iTunes now. You can buy any individual song you want, and you can go on at any time and randomly download songs. It's more convenient and just makes more sense IMO.

As for DVDs, if we're saying they'll be replaced by digital means (which I think was what was being said in the original post), I don't think so quite yet. If we're saying they'll be replaced by Blue-Ray, then yes, it's only a matter of time.

Every local band I've come across shares their music through CDs as a main focus. Why? because it's cheap (Usually $5), and it's a personal way to give out to the fans, which is important for local bands. Also, if they just say "visit our Myspace", chances are, you'll forget as gigs usually involve being at a bar, which means alcohol, and if it's good, an after party, etc.

About the Blu Ray on PCs thing again. There's one MAJOR difference between the jump from CDs->DVDs and DVDs->BRs...And that is DD. Digital Distribution. Because of DD (Hell, let's just say Steam), alot of gamers are not bothering with DVD copies of games anymore. So what would be the point of upgrading to BR when the market is shifting to Steam for their games? It's not worth it for the companies consider DVDs are hella cheap to mass produce.

I buy nearly all my music on vinyl, so i don't know. Vinyl seems to be lasting a while.

DVDs will be overtaken by bluray very soon.

Still rockin' the GameBoy brick. Yes, I do believe it's portable. It fits in my satchel.

I agree. I perfer to download all my songs; it's a lot more convenient and portable. I also rent most my movies from iTunes, too especially for vacations, so I don't use many DVDs or CDs. It does have its disadvantages, though (no ACDC makes me )
