What works in the UK does not make a transferable template for every country, Sean.

Ban easy ownership of the weapons and restrict their manufacture; gradually remove them from public ownership and you're good to go.

Britain also used to have publicly available handguns and now has extreme restrictions on it. It's certainly possible the same thing can be achieved in the United States; the population just needs to be receptive to it and see that it's not necessary to possess these weapons.

Heh. you make it sound so simple. As MERG and Vendetta said, that's just not going to happen. While I don't feel I fit the definition of gun nut and do support stricter controls, there's just no chance I'd give my guns up. Ever.

@ The Fox. Agreed. I like my guns, but I'm no gun-freak, but that still doesn't change the fact that they're not taking my guns away from me. For many people, guns aren't for protection, they're novelties, just like collecting video games. I love handguns, but I'm probably not going to get a concealed carry license anytime soon; I just think shooting guns is fun

Everyone needs a gun for self defence and has a right to own one. I also got an armoured tank to be on the safe side. It might sound excessive, but if someone comes into my home with a gun, I'll be ready. Hang on, what if they come with a tank as well? I'm going to have to think this out again...

I was shocked and saddened when I read this, and it made me remember how genuinely disturbed I was while reading this thread.

Wake up America!

If he had any value for his kids lives' he wouldn't have had his 'precious' guns in the first place.

Is it still fun when a member of your own family accidentally gets shot dead by your own guns?

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

@ Machu:
Tragic indeed, but more an issue of irresponsibility on the part of the owners and downright sh*tty parents.
And, hey, weren't you leaving the thread? That didn't last long.

@those commenting from other countries
I know you're just throwing in your opinion over the gun situation in America but the truth is you're not saying anything that hasn't been said before. The fact that your view comes more or less completely from movies and various news stories really doesn't help that you're outsiders looking in on this topic. Banning guns seems like such an easy answer, yet the situation is far more complex.

Oh I'll be back to hurl abuse at you from time to time. If it was in real life I'd stay well away though, for fear of being shot.

i don't believe in guns i find them the cowards way to kill
i own a katana and morning star for self protection. and guns wouldn't be needed for protection if they were so easy for criminals to get in the first place i do believe that america needs harsher gun laws like the rest of the world.

@Bass XO
"When" a member gets shot dead from one of your own guns? I didn't realize a remote, tragic possibility was in fact a stone cold certainty.

By the way, Bass, my father had guns, and if you're inplying about him with your first comment what I think you're implying its lucky this a forum and not a face to face. Responsible gun owners exist.

I own a BB Gun, capable of kill someone. But I've only used it on practice targets and occasionally, shot some targets to scare some animals away from my plants, but I'd never fire at them.

No, I just meant things would get highly unpleasant, although I didn't really mean for it to sound like a threat.

Nope don't have one, however I do like guns to be honest.

In the UK you can't get a gun anywhere really, its just a bunch of people carrying knives.

The thing is: The fact that everybody can have a gun is the reason that every criminal has a gun and therefore you need a gun to protect yourself. So that is no argument. I live in Germany just very few people own guns so most criminals just have knives or something and therefore you don't need guns to protect yourself...

That was sort of my point. I guess it got lost in translation.

'I needed a gun to defend myself.'
'Why?'
'Because they were coming at me with a gun!'

@TheFox: I know, but it seemed funny. I'm not getting at you directly, I'm sure you are very responsible. But for every responsible gun-owner, there is some idiot or cowboy who puts his own family at risk whilst thinking it offers some kind of protection. I will try n stay away from this thread now i promise, it was just reading about that lil lad shooting himself in the head, got to me.

I'm with you with the shooting guns is fun, and is basically all I do with them. I don't even go hunting (not that I judge those that do). The one time I did I had a huge buck dead in my sights and I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger. The only time I've used a gun to kill anything was to kill a few coyotes around my friends farm a few years back. They were killing chickens, tore apart their barn cats they had even attacked both of the family dogs. Still not a pleasant experience.

Recently a police officer was struck in the leg by a copy of Duck Hunt. The assailent threw the video game with such force as to cause permanent damage. He now has to have a plaster on his right leg for a day or so. If the officer had had a sharp edged NES game on him he would have been able to defend himself. This is what happens when NES games fall into the wrong hands. If you wish to collect video games please keep them locked away when you are not playing them. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Wow, that's one of the most ignorant comments I've ever read. Obviously if you have kids you're supposed to keep your guns locked away, and supervise them. This has little to do with guns. It is about parental responsibility.

You have indeed seen what guns can do. They are dangerous, and easily destructive. I in no way argue with that. Guns are not toys, they are not staus symbols to wield, but in crime blighted areas they frequently are treated exactly as such. More needs to be done stopping gun violence, but I'm still waiting for anyone here to suggest a PRACTICAL solution.
