I don't, as I barely have enough money for my own life. But then again...a bum has nothing while I at least have a small little apartment. And I have a Wii, so I'm not exactly in a position to be dying of hunger. So I feel selfish in that respect. I can't imagine how a bum truly feels.

Selfish? Don't you work for that stuff? Its the bum's fault for not succeeding in life.

@WhoKnew: your compassion is staggering.

@RJay: If someone asks me for money and I've got some spare change on me, I'll usually give them some. You never know when the tables will be turned and you'll be asking someone else for that quarter or that buck someday.

No, I usually don't because I don't know if they're just going to waste it on booze, but mostly just because I agree partly with both RJay and WhoKnew

I never give money, but I try and keep nutrition bars on hand to give to the homeless if I'm in the city.

I've always wanted to give some booze to a bum... One day, I'll make a vagrant's day!

When I lived in London I did (what a hellish year that was, kinda) but only cos' there was sooo many of them. I'd get them a sandwich n' a sweet coffee, that's it no cash, cos they can't be trusted with that. ;)

And maybe a bifta or two.

EDIT: @Dazza: Perfect! :) And thanks for letting me here that again.

That sounds fun. But I have never given a bum money.

I'll bet you've never worked a day at a real job in your life either. The only difference between you and them is that you have supportive parents.

Well you waste money on booze, so what's wrong with them drinking too? Frankly, they could use it more than you.

Actually, I don't drink. Never have. And I'm not too concerned whether others do, even bums. I fail to see how a bum using booze will help their situation, though. Still, I'm not really worried about that, I just don't usually give money to bums because I don't have a lot to spare, and I don't know why they don't just get a job. Some of them are retarded, but they can function enough to ask for money, so they can probably function well enough to say "Welcome to Wal-Mart"

You would if you were a bum! I know I'd need a drink...

Well, it's often the case that their addictions, mental illnesses, past traumatic experiences, or handicaps prevent them from being able to hold down a job. And besides, Walmart only hires people who have acceptable hygiene. It's not like you can walk off the street and into Walmart and get a job.

There is a bum that spends most of his time at this intersection as you leave the city near where I live. If I get a burger on my way out of the city, I always get two extra for this guy and his dog. I've been doing it for years.

That's sweet, Corbie!

And me? Well, I rarely ever see homeless people, but when I do, I'd rather just give money to them through a charity or organization to help these people out. (If there happens to be one.)

There was a bum that traveled around in my city (Pretoria, back in South Africa) but this guy was hard to the core! He wandered around in the winter with impunity, ringing doorbells and throwing cars with dirt if the drivers' change was insufficient, all the while carrying all his belongings in a clear plastic bag, flung over his shoulder. My brother yelled his name out of his car once, and instead of flipping us off, like he usually did, he waved, and for the whole day my brother had lots of good luck. Like a smelly good luck charm! Some days I wonder if he's okay...
EDIT: The bum, not my brother.

I live in a smaller (less than 100,000) town, so there aren't too many that panhandle. There is one homeless guy that wanders around my neighborhood that I always give a little spare cash to because of his history. He was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam whom crashed and had his body badly burned and his left arm crushed. When he got back he couldn't find steady work because his burns meant nobody wanted to put him with the public and his nearly useless left arm kept him from doing any jobs involving heavy labor. He's actually a nice guy and I always strike up a conversation when I see him (unlike some people).

Of course, some people here no doubt would claim I shouldn't give him anything becasue its his own fault he didn't succeed in life.
