You never tended to see them in public; I think most people had Lites'.

Does anyone still have an Original DS model?

@Eel Did you turn it into a Macro (a bigger GBA)?

@OhianGamer kinda. Mostly out of necessity, because the top screen really didn’t work anymore. I didn’t get any fancy shell or did anything to improve the aesthetics of it, so it looks very very very ugly. But I only use it transfer Pokémon from the GBA games to the DS games anyway so it doesn’t matter.

I did make the extra effort of relocating one of the speakers though, so it still has sound.

I still do to this day. I remember playing Mario 64 and Mario Kart DS on it as a kid during summer camp. Although i don't use it anymore (couldn't if i wanted to cause the charger got busted), it's still a cool piece of history and part my childhood.

I do but my house mate knocked it off the bed at uni and it split in two. I was playing Pokémon Black at the time. It still worked though so i taped it back together with masking tape which I actually refreshed a couple years ago because it was looking a little ratty and retaped it with scotch tape. Luckily there was enough hinge left to tape so it still opens and closes!

There were a few people at my secondary school with the original DS. We used to pictochat during class and on the coach to school trips. We would play that "folded paper" game where you'd like draw a bit of a pic each and see how they joined up but using picto chat instead. We would also draw pics of members and send them to eachother.

I remember we played a lot of the Metroid Prime First Hunt demo multiplayer in similar scenarios because everybody had it.

I also remember finishing Mario 64 DS on a plane, getting all ~150 stars on it. Using the thumbpad on the touch screen as an analog stick! My touch screen was soo scratched up, probably because of that. Of course I've used screen protectors on every DS/3DS since!

I think a lot more people did end up getting DS Lites when they came out.

Several of my friends had an original DS and I did intend on getting one but when the DS Lite was announced I just waited to get the Lite. The original DS definitely felt like a beta product, it was painfully obvious that the Lite was the better design. By the end of that year I think most people who had the original DS had picked up the DS Lite

Also you have to remember, the DS Lite was announced in very early 2006. Most of the heavy hitters for the DS launched after the DS Lite. Or at least after it was announced. The game that pulled me across the line to get the DS was New SMB. In Australia New SMB released a week after the DS Lite. Pokemon didn't come out until 2007 here. Same with Zelda and Professor Layton. There were certainly games on the DS before the Lite (Mario Kart, Mario 64) but.... I think it's fair to say the DS only really gained momentum after the DS Lite

I have 4 Phats Unfortunately, 2 of them have dead pixels

I love their look, but the displays are pure trash and way too dark! The Lite and DSi XL are pure joy to play on

Buizel

Add me to the list of people who had the phat, but it broke in half.

I remember really liking the form factor, even once the Lite had come out. I've never had much opportunity to compare them side-by-side however (currently I own a Lite and DSi XL, with preference for the latter, and it's been a decade or so since disposing of the original DS).

At least 2'8".

I still have mine somewhere at home. I only upgraded once to a DSi XL. Yeah, it’s not a looker. but I had no serious complaints with it. It’s somehow lasted a long time in rough conditions but if it could just be cleaned up I’m sure it can still play.

I actually do have a Nintendo DS Phat. I accidentally broke the screen on like when I was much younger though and it has been cracked ever since. It still can be used for Game Boy Advance games since you adjust the screen settings to where the Game Boy Advance game can display on whichever screen you choose. I had the blue one too. Such a nice color.

@ralphdibny This is one reason I'm thankful to be living in my own apartment.

Related to the question, I did in fact have a silver DS in Christmas 2004! (my first games were the Metroid Prime Hunters demo, Super Mario 64 DS and The Urbz: Sims in the City)

I had one up until two years ago when it was stolen. I used it till I got my 3DS and even still after that.

I actually got the VIP edition from Club Nintendo back in the day. It came with Mario 64 DS and 2 demo carts (I think Metroid First Hunt and Warioware). It also came early so I had it before the general UK release. Good old Club Nintendo ❤️
