I think it's the way the market changed so much with the DS in particular. Everyone seemed to have one, with the attraction of a touchscreen making them very accessible. Those same people—and I know many of them, as I've gotten a few extra DSs off of them since they didn't want them anymore—went to iPads and iPhones to play the games they wanted to play. Sure, they were never likely to pick up Etrian Odyssey on the DS, but the casual, bite-sized titles transferred to mobile quite well. And since they're buying phones and tablets to fit their lives anyhow, buying a separate game system was/is no longer a priority.

There have been quite a few games that reached the mobile market like Shantae and Sonic.
In these times phones and tablets is getting more popular and I expect to see more games in the future. Maybe apple makes some kind of N-Gage wannabe.

So the impossible happened and Rock Band 4 is something that'll exist and only on current gen. All DLC is being transferred over for free if you already own it on last gen so really everything falls on whether Nintendo impresses or disappoints at E3.

I look forward to Zelda U and Xenoblades Chronicles X as everyone else, but Nintendo needs to give us something juicy soon. Hopefully there is a Nintendo Direct around the corner.

The key thing for me is that Xenoblade Chronicles X needs to be released during the summer for it to be worth me buying. I expect that from around September my free time will largely decrease and JRPGs like Xenoblade are huge time sinks. Zelda U we do not have enough info but from what's been provided so far it looks like it'll be the same situation as Xenoblade Chronicles X. So really that leaves Splatoon, Yoshi, Star Fox and Mario Maker which will (hopefully) mostly be before E3 anyway.

Five releases on a console from Christmas to summer is a bit too scrawny. Which is a even bigger reason for Nintendo to get more friendly with other game publishers.

I don't know why the topic was moved to General Discussion. To put it under "life and everything with it" is a bit odd when the topic revolves around Wii U.

I don't even get the comparison to the Dreamcast. That's like comparing apples to oranges because they are both fruit.

The Dreamcast, while successful, ultimately died because Sega was at a breaking point by its launch. Its success really did not help.

The Wii U's issues pretty much come down to three or so things:

1. Nintendo seems to hate the idea of marketing, so anywhere that Nintendo isn't already popular is just about a lost cause for them.

2. The Wii U's gimmick wasn't one people wanted, and isn't particularly marketable.

3. The games don't appeal to people outside their core fanbases, because Nintendo's lost sight of what made the originals sell.

4. Third parties hate them, perhaps because of their history with the NES and SNES (or perhaps because they know they'd have to compete with strong first party offerings).

But these are mostly problems that can be overcome, and Nintendo is too rich to become like Sega anyway.

I would rewrite this. It should say "Some fans ignore all marketing efforts made by Nintendo to make a point about the Wii U's struggles, whether that marketing was effective or not."

How many UK TV ads have you seen recently? Ads in print media, or ads on billboards, or ads outside of their social media presence?

Maybe it's different in other parts of the world, or if you watch kids channels. But I see more ads for Sony and Microsoft's products than Nintendo's.

Oh I can't speak for the UK, however here in America Nintendo regularly attends events, occasionally puts on TV ads, promotes to indies, etc.

I hate to admit it, but Nintendo isn't a competitor anymore. The only bargaining chips they have left are their own first-party titles. But you can't live on your own first party titles to keep bringing in your income forever. They're going to have to do something drastic to start rolling in some fresh blood. All you need is strong 3rd party support, the first party titles will make them stay.

In this day and age with money being tight, most people are going to choose one of two consoles, either Sony or Microsoft. Nintendo won't be at the forefront of peoples minds anymore.

They haven't been since the N64. That's why they decided to carve out their own market instead.

We really have to stop looking at Nintendo as a competitor to Sony and Microsoft. They're in a different group, competing for a different audience with different strategies. Nintendo is as much a competitor to Sony and Microsoft as Valve is. Sort of, but not really.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

They're in the green now despite their slow sales. Perhaps slow and steady is the way to go, with some improvements of course

if money is tight in this day and age why do you think people would want one of the toilet, more expensive consoles? most people i know have nintendo in their thoughts again - nobody wants an xbox one or to deal with microsoft's idiocy, nobody wants to deal with amateur sony who are going down the drain fast, nobody respects either brand like they respect nintendo.

I believe Nintendo is making the right decisions this generation and are working on their legacy. One big reason why the Wii U failed as hard as it did was the Wii had few games near the end of its life. A lot of people jumped on the PS4 because of how long Sony supported the PS3 even when no one wanted it. Nintendo needs to follow the example and continue to support their hardware and create a "legacy" with their software for Wii U to push sales for the next hardware, just my opinion

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.

Because of many things including:

  • Want to play a shooter? Sorry but unless you want to play a game you've likely owned on a previous console, you'll have to wait until May 2015 and even that may not suit your style.
  • Want to talk to your friends over the internet? Sorry but voice chat mostly isn't a thing and in the rare cases it is present then it's somehow limited.
  • Want to play a JRPG? Sorry but out of the only 2 JRPGs we have lined up, 1 of them is MIA and the other could release anytime in 2015.
  • Want to take advantage of DLC from 3rd party games? Sorry but 3rd parties decided to create an inferior version for us.
  • Have all the games you want to own by late May and want more? Sorry but a game drought is inbound with the next main release coming at the end of September.

The list goes on and these issues are what stands between Nintendo and a huge pot of money from Wii U sales. To last on the Wii U platform alone, you need to be a completionist. For example "Look there's 120 challenges in Smash Wii U, I'm going to try and complete them all despite there being some insanely difficult ones" or "I'm going to fully complete all 5 Adventure maps for Hyrule Warriors"

I feel like most of those are loaded questions, also next big Wii U release is happening this month. What drought are you talking about?

He's saying there's nothing confirmed after Splatoon releases in May...since Nintendo likes to only set release dates when they're absolutely sure they'll make them (or at least has been doing that since late 2013). Nintendo seems to think people still like surprises, I guess...

I do, but I am really bad when it comes to surprises cause I want to know so badly. lol

I also like surprises, but I also want to know there's at least something to look forward to in the near future and yes I was referring to post-Splatoon and similarly post-MK8 last year.

@CanisWolfred True though one may have decided to try out Hyrule Warriors due to the large drought (May 31st - Mid/Late September).

@TingLz Most of them don't apply to me either but I'd expect they would be rather common for a general person deciding between a Wii U and XB1/PS4 purchase. For me, question 5 was the most prominent over the last year. That said, most of this was my fault as I didn't ask for advice regarding Mario & Sonic vs Wonderful 101 for my free game reward from Mario Kart 8. Also not owning a hard drive until January 2015 was a stupid idea of mine.
