Is there anyone here who suffers badly from acrophobia? If so, then you probably are aware of what I'm going through. Whenever I'm at an overly high place, whether it be from a tower or building, then I have a fear of falling down. My parents first noticed it when we made it to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa three summers ago in '06 in Italy. But, as the years progress, I keep fighting my fear, if only gradually. This summer, me and my parents made it all the way to the top of the Empire State Building (120 floors); I was still scared of heights, but my fear seemed to have gotten better then. At least I wasn't all panicky as back in '06. Ironically, the only place where I don't fear heights is whenever we fly on an airplane. I guess I only show my fear when it comes to overly high places. I'm tryng to fight it, not be pushed by it. Anyone else afraid of heights?
Sean Aaron ~ "The secret is out: I'm really an American cat-girl." Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.
You know those stairs that don't have backs to them, just the horizontal "stair" part. I used to be really scared of those when I was a kid. Heights don't bother me that much, as long as there are like, railings and stuff. I can imagine the Leaning Tower of Pisa would be scary though, feeling like it might fall over. I would never go skydiving, and I did chicken out on bungee jumping (was on the ledge with the cable attached and everything), so I'm going to with the I'm afraid of falling group.
I'm scared of snakes and crabs. If I'm swimming in the ocean, and something hits me, I freak out that it's a crab and it's going to pinch me. Jellyfish too. I love swimming in the ocean, but I think if I was in a tropical area, it would be tough. I'd be freaking about jellyfish! Yay, irrational fears!
I was not scared until I fell off or should I say was knocked off a 20ft ladder onto a receiving floor that was concrete while I was at work. Guess what ! I did not have time to look down because by time I could I was laying on the floor.
I am afraid you are all mixing simple fear with phobia. The best was to explain it is though example. A loved one was about to die and the only way to save them was to climb to the top of the emprire state building. If you are afraid fo hights it seems not to be much of a consequence because that loved one's life hangs in the balance, you would start to head up right away despite you being scared. A Phobia on the other hand, you would have serious issues about climbing to the top of the emprie state building even though you know you loved ones life depends on it.

@ATRUEZELDAFAN yup, you're probably right there, this is more a fear most of us our talking about here, not a phobia (where chances are you wouldn't even get close enough to the edge of anything high to worry about falling! Or even venture to the top of anything high for that matter.)
As for me, me big problem is with the height of railings - I'm 6 foot 4ish, and I find most railings barely reach the top of my thighs, so when I'm using one high up it tends to feel like I'm going to lose balance and just fall over the thing
@Token Girl: My sister was scared o' those when she was lil, aaww! We lived in a house with stairs like that for a while, oh my the tears.
As for me I love heights, what's the worst thing that could happen eh? When I was a drunken teen we used to go up to the top of the 6-storey car park, sit down with our backs to the edge and tuck our legs under the railing and slowly lean back until we were upside down looking out over the city. Awesome! I used to a lot of abseiling and climbing as well, I did a reverse 'jesus christ' on the side of a cliff. That was sweet looking out over the Lake-District, but upside down. I've done lots of silly things like that. Done a bungie and a catapult, but I wanna get into base-jumping and sky-diving (only done a tandom) at some point too that would rock! I love heights, and the adrenaline buzz you get from that fear of falling. Mmmmmm
@StarBoy91: Mind over matter my lad. If you tell yourself not to freak out, then you won't. Suck it up!
@Luigidude: I assume vertigo is the sensation brought about by the fear. Everything going all funky and legs going all wobbly. Dunno, you've made me wanna find out now.......
EDIT: Yeah, vertigo is the effects of said fear. Dizzy, whirly, spinny, woohoo! Sounds like a buzz.
