@Reala You can't always tell if someone is online, and you might want to address them personally without going off-topic. It's not essential, but it would make it easier. If you just want to talk to one person, it's better to leave a comment for them instead of creating a forum thread.

I don't like being watched... it's creepy. I would like to say one thing though, if you do this please don't make it email you when someone friends you or sends a message, otherwise my dad'll get spammed. I never use the nintendo tech forums now because of that.

@SuperPeach Like I said, you would have the option to stop certain people watching you, or just stop people adding you altogether. Anyway, I highly doubt this will happen.

Updated comments are easy to find, a friend list would have zero effect in that example, a pm feature might though.

@Reala I'd rather be able to know quickly if a friend has made a comment than have to check every recent article and forum thread. Updated comments are easy to find, but not necessarily comments from a friend.

Sanitized stalking where's the fun in that seriously though, most of the time the site moves at a reasonable enough pace, the main page shows the last 5 updates, including the name and avatar of the user that commented, would rather see the forum topics area updated, to allow you to select/de-select categories or increase the number of updates shown, just less gimmicky that way, rather keep all the popularity stuff out of nl, be it friends lists, comment thumbs or top user/leaderboard kind of stuff.

Fair enough. I understand what you mean, even if I disagree. By the way, about it being popularity, you could always limit the number of possible friends (say, like, 20 max). I don't think it's gimmicky, because IMO, it's useful.

that said, i'm not really behind this as a 'friends' feature -- you tend to get the 'well why did so-and-so take me off their friends' list?????' BS when it's called 'friends', and especially when it comes to some of the more sensitive and/or younger users here, it'll get annoying fast. 'users i'm watching' would work just as well... i'm more interested in this in terms of something that allows me to keep track of what others have posted recently and in what threads. :3

@TBD - welcome to why I no longer have facebook. It basically turned into a convenient way for all my ex-girlfriends to continuously ask why I wasn't adding them as friends. That and leaked personal info ftl.

You know Facebook has an ignore feature, right?
