This was one of the first ideas I ever had for a game when the DS came out, and I always assumed that Nintendo had gotten right on it. Apparently I'm wrong...but, why not? I think it would be awesome! Maybe it might be a bit hard to pull off, but I'm sure Nintendo would find a way to make it work out. I really want to see this happen.
Sakurai already said he isn't interested in sequels, and I don't blame him. It'll be interesting to see what Nintendo does with the series without him, if they continue it at all. It would be a waste to forget it entirely, but I think if Nintendo did it without his help they'd ramp up the luck factor like they have in Mario Kart. But who knows, maybe that could work.
I don't see the need for it on DS though. Touch screen wouldn't benefit it, and neither would dual screens. Maybe a sequel more in the style of SB64 but with more vertical stages would be good. I wouldn't count on the series leaving consoles though. Fighters have never been hugely popular on handhelds.
Jump Superstars and especially Jump Ultimate Stars on DS are meant to be as good as if not better than SSB. I've never played, I must admit. They're import from Japan only, though, but apparently the language barrier aint too great in those games. The price, however, is. Not cheap.
And they use the touch screen interesting ways, for example in choosing your fighters from a manga cartoon strip that plays out on touch screen. (Damn, I may talk myself into paying out for this...!)
Yikes, just watched a video of it. The fighting area is way too small. It looks like a mess. It would really benefit from a camera like in Smash that shows all characters at once. Doesn't look like any language barrier during game play, though, which is a plus.
There is a pretty big language barrier in jump ultimate stars. I've played an english subtitled rom of it and you need to know what's being said, or else you won't know what you need to do to complete a mission.
True. I just think of the multi-player as the main game for Smash, like most do, with the single player stuff as side offerings put in just because it is generally assumed that games need some sort of "story" mode (I mean "story" as in a mode in which you have to progress through gradually, not necessarily with an actual story to it). So when you said "mission-based," it didn't cross my mind that someone might play Brawl more for its Subspace or challenge modes.
If Jump Stars's versus mode isn't text heavy, I might have to look into that should I ever get a DS.
of course same problem with the other Smash Bros. games; it's only shovelware don't let Nintendo ever make a game again, it's most likely going to be shovelware

What are you talking about?! That would be the best DS game ever! In fact, I e-mailed Nintendo once, asking if they ever thought of making one. That's how bad I want it!
Because the DS's controls would suck for it. Also, Smash is a fighter, those things are inherently poorly suited to the DS's screens. You get tiny characters, tiny stages, and either make the stages way too vertical or even smaller by only using one screen.
Isn't the whole point of Smash Bros to invite your mates around and kick the crap out of each other? It would sorta take the social aspect out of it if they made a DS version. Why not just stick with Melee, Brawl, or if you're that desperate, Project 64 and a ROM of the first one?

Errr the DS has wireless communication and download play I don't see why you think you couldn't play it with friends? But I really think it'll stay a console-only game my previous posts should just show why I think that it would be possible and it could be a great game...
I know you could but it just wouldn't work. Kinda like Mario Kart DS; it just wasn't as social.
