I've had my DSi for less than 7 months, and 5 months ago, the L Button quickly became very unresponsive. But now it doesn't work at all I had just realized. I had this same problem on my DS Lite. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I hear it's common, but I'm not too sure...really bugs me. I just hope that someday I won't come across a game that REQUIRES the use of the L Button...
nintendo will fix for a fee. best choice because if anything happens to the stored games on the hard drive they can transfer to a new one. mine for my ds, dsl both broke L and R. Those parts seem to be made poorly.
Thorium Wars is about to bust my R button since it requires nonstop pressing to shoot.
Actually, it doesn't. Just hold down that button and then fly your craft with the bottom control pad buttons... Works for me!

Just curious... So have you contacted Nintendo, Cheezy, and what did they say?

I haven't called Nintendo yet, but I'm just afraid I might lose all my downloaded games and apps, as well as my original system settings, and I probably won't see it again for a while. I really have a hard time trusting things like that.
Call them and talk to them, Cheezy, and see what they say, and also back up all your games/apps/pics/whatever to SD before sending it off. It may take a week to get it back (like the Wii that was sent off just recently on the forums; it came back a couple days ago, but i forget whose it was at the moment), but your buttons will all work again.
I think most of us are wary about sending off our beloved (and expensive) consoles to be repaired, but just talk to Nintendo's customer service line. They'll be able to reassure you and tell you flat-out what will happen or not happen to your DSi's games/settings info (aren't they able to transfer all that stuff to a new DSi if push comes to shove and they have to replace the entire thing?); i'm sure they have to do it all the time with wary consumers. :3

Don't worry. If you send your system in to Nintendo to get fixed, they will transfer all your games to a new system. That's what they told me and did for mine when my software was acting wonky. Even the statement from that Australian Nintendo gave that as an exception: http://dsiware.nintendolife.com/news/2009/09/official_dsiware...
There are exceptions to the rule - they are more than happy to transfer those purchases if the original console is in an unplayable condition. They have special kits that enable them to find out what has been downloaded to the DSi without having to turn the system on. They also said that in order for them to transfer from one to another, they need both consoles in their possession.

Same problem, and I need that button to hold my Mario Kart items! X doesn't fit my style!
