I was just flipping through an old Nintendo power to see what they thought of it.
They said it's pretty good but I noticed a mistake in the magazine's review.
They called it Gargoyles quest 2. I'm pretty sure the Gameboy game is the original.
The Nes game is the sequel.
Anyway I'm going to go ahead and get it. I've heard nothing but good things about it so might as well go for it.
I hope good sales might persuade Capcom to release the whole series.

Which issue are you looking at? There is a Game Boy version of the sequel, but it was only released in Japan. There was a North American Game Boy version, but it apparently got lost in the Ghoul Realm on its way to stores.
(NP reviewed it, they expected it to be released, but it was canceled with no explanation)

Ugh, i absolutely hated it when Nintendo Power would mention a game that ended up never getting released. So many broken hearts.

Well I downloaded the game and after playing it for 53 minutes I like it. I have to admit though I wasn't expecting it to be so slow. Firebrand moves too slow. I've probably just been playing a lot of fast paced games. Other than that I like it. Not the best GB game, but not the worst. Definitely a good game. I should really get deeper into the game before I make more comments on it though.

@ kingMike
I was looking at the July 93 issue. There's a walkthrough for the game on page 66.
The game was supposed to be released that same month but they canned it.
I never knew they made a Gameboy version of the sequel so I assumed it was the original game.
Once I saw it didn't look the same I put two and two together.

@Retro_on_theGo I think you're right when you say you should play the game more before commenting further. The game gets way more intense and way more difficult and challenging as you go on. I love the RPG aspects, kind of reminds me of Zelda 2 with the 'jumping into an action scene' all of a sudden. I expect they copied that right from Zelda 2, but I don't mind. This is an amazing game!! I am finding NO FAULTS with it thus far and I'm nearly halfway through

I really want to pick this game up, because the NL review was so good, and the videos on Youtube look great. I am just not sure if I should buy the game, when we have so many NES games coming soon (I'm an ambassador.) I think I def need to pick it up sometime soon, regardless.

I am in the Tower level, and it is awesome! It is like a cross between Zelda II and a 2D Metroid game. This game is somewhat hard, but the restore points makes the game a lot more playable. It is certainly worth the money!

Just finished it last night and loved it! Took about three hours to complete but that's pretty much all you can expect.
It's short but very sweet. I hope releasing the Nes and Snes sequels has crossed Capcom's minds.
Firebrand is actually a cool little Gargoyle when he's not the bad guy.
I hate that bastard in the Ghost and goblins series.

I'll get it eventually, but I wouldn't consider it without the VC's restore point. Judging from the harsh level of difficulty stated here, I probably couldn't beat any more than the first one or two dungeons without the restore point. It's gameplay reminds me of my Sega Genesis game, Gargoyles (based on the 90's cartoon of the same name), so I hope I have just as much fun with the gameplay in this game.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

I totally agree about the restore point thing. It is quite handy for difficult games like this.
I almost feel like I'm cheating by using them but if it gets the job done I say use it.
Whatever works right? It's a hard game no joke but it's still fair. If you die it's usually your own fault.
With enough practice you could probably get by without the restore points.

What have people been using the restore point for? You can buy lives and I've found it's usually not that hard to collect the vials to pay for them. Now if you lost all your vials when you died that would be another story...

It mainly helps when you miss a jump in a stage and want to reload your spot and try again.
Rather than dying and being sent back to the start of a stage.
It also helps if you take too many hits during a boss fight and want to start over right at the boss.

Btw nice Avatar! Would that be Usagi Yojimbo the samurai rabbit?

Actually it's Miyamoto Usagi. I think the character might have been incorrectly introduced in one of the TMNT cartoons as Usagi Yojimbo which is actually the name of the comic book not the character.

I can see where people are coming from with the restore point thing but I feel it destroys some of the elements of gameplay to a degree. Why have lives when you can just make a restore point at the start of the level and go back when you die?
To each their own, I guess.

I see what you mean. It does kinda negate the purpose of the extra lives.
It makes the game too easy and you lose credibility by using restore points.
Makes it feel like you didn't earn your victory.
Now I feel guilty and want to try playing it without the restore thing.

Extra lives don't matter much if you can't beat the level and therefore can never experience the majority of the game.

I agree that Restore Points take a certain thing away from the game but the fact is that I severely suck at this game and restore points make me feel safer and keep my frustration down. I think restore points are brilliant. Older games tend to be just too hard and restore points alleviate an otherwise insurmountable challenge. I read that this game was quite difficult before I bought it. Like old school difficult. TBH, I probably wouldn't have bought it if I restore points weren't there to baby me. Now if I beat the game using god knows how many restores, then perhaps I'll go through again feeling more comfortable in knowing what lies ahead. But yeah, restore points are a total savior for someone who totally sucks at a lot of older games (me).

Totally agree with u on that one, Bboy LOL. Anyways, I am loving this game. You know what... the restore points are there for you to use or not to use. Frankly I like to use them... In today's fast paced world, we don't have time to replay a whole dang level again lol I just keep saving as I go and make progress, that way my progress isn't lost. When using a restore point, a part of the frustration is lost, and to me, that's not a bad thing. lol

Finally finished this game the other day after putting it down and picking it back up (that's how i play them, btw) so just wanted to report its a short but super awesome game. One of my favorite 3DS VC downloadables, by the way. Graphics, sound, level design, superb!

I reached the very first town in the game, and now I'm unable to venture any further. I tried to cross the bridge multiple times. Which is the only path currently available, but it's impossible to cross. Can anybody please help me head in the right direction?

You need the wing upgrade, which I THINK you get in the town, from talking to the guy in charge. Check all the buildings.

I guess it depends by what is making the bridge "impossible." Is there a wall that's literally impossible to get over? Because if you can clear the first wall, you're set to go. If not...you need the upgrade.
