Should I get this and Shining Force or Columns and Shining Force? both puzzle games are pretty similar, which one would I have more fun with? First time game gear player here.

Personally, I prefer Mean Bean Machine, but Columns is also very fun. There's really no way to tell which one you would enjoy more. Maybe you should wait for Nintendo Life's reviews.

In columns you got 4 or 5 block sets to choose from and three songs, there is two modes and local multiplayer, mean bean machine has a few modes but you got to beat story mode to get them (I'm pretty sure) and has local multiplayer and that's about it.
