3DS is still running and will be for a quite a bit, Nintendo said this themselves in interviews for the Switch. I wouldn't be surprised to even see a 3DS successor in a few years or so.

Oasis is out in March I think, we've got dragon quest 8 in a few days and there's also a new Mario Sports game coming. Reggie also mentioned more unannounced titles are coming to 3ds, we should see 3ds support til end of 2017.
I expect 3DS support to continue throughout 2017 and (at least) into part of 2018. There are plenty of games that haven't made it out of Japan yet, as some have mentioned.
Currently playing: Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)
Nintendo seem to say they're keeping the console going.
I bet they just saw how well Pokemon Sun/Moon sold and then how well Mario Maker 3DS has sold and thought they should probably keep confidence in the console alive so that the remaining games have as big an audience as possible.
My guess would be that there are no remaining big budget first party games coming though.
Nintendo themselves said that the 3DS is going to be around alongside the Switch so you can bet there will be still be first party games coming to the 3DS.
Want: Harvest Moon: One World, Story of Seasons: Pioneering Town, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
Finished the Alola Dex.
Now playing New Horizons, Wrath of White Witch and Sword

They could just be hedging their bets like when they said the DS wasn't going to replace the GBA.

Nintendo also said that the Switch would be the third pillar, alonside the WiiU and 3DS...
I doubt we'll see much from Ninty themselves, but I don't think the Japanese devs will transition so quickly, so we'll probably see more games for quite a while, I'm sure.
For a short while we'll see more games. But I don't expect to see many past about the end of 2017 or so, since the Switch is simply Nintendo's main priority now, and third parties won't want to bother with an 'obsolete' system.
I think we'll get support for the 3DS in 2017, specially since they just announced a new FE for it, but they'll start pushing more and more the Switch internally and with other developers as we approach the end of the year.
I hope this is the last year for 3DS. Amazing console with amazing game, but soon it will be time for Nintendo to devote all their energy to the Switch.

But the Switch is a home console first and foremost. Yeah it is portable but it's not the same kind of portable as the 3DS. I just think it's too soon to say that the Switch is going to take over both markets.
