I currently have a blue 3ds. Because it didn't charge normally after about a year, I got a Nyko battery (which doubles the system's battery) and a special Nyko charging base to enable it to charge. I'm getting the New 3ds XL in a few days, but I can't decide if I want to transfer my data or not. I have 3 deciding factors:
1. Does the Full Wireless Transfer ACTUALLY transfer ALL your save data for every game wirelessly, without the need for a PC?
2. How good is the New 3ds' battery? Is it worth sacrificing my old Nyko Battery 3ds?
3. How well can the XL fit in most pockets? I've seen it before when my cousin was playing his, and it seemed to fit in my pocket, but I never actually sat down or anything to see how it felt when I moved around.
Go to a public library if you have too and use a PC there.
Find a friend who has a computer or laptop and use theirs.
I can't stress enough to avoid doing it w/o a computer.
EDIT: The 3DS XL battery lasts longer than the original 3DS battery. And the New 3DS XL fits completely into everyone of my jeans pockets just fine. (It's about the only positive thing I can praise atm about this new handheld.)
1. Yes
2. It's pretty good, I've been getting around 3 hours out of it per charge, I think. Depends on your settings.
3. It fits perfectly in my pocket, it hasn't fallen out of anything either. Maybe a little big when I sit down, but it's not too bad.

Why not a wireless transfer? I'm not very good with files on computers, so I'm afraid I'll mess something up like I've heard other people have. My cousin has told me the unlimited wireless transfer actually transfers your save data AND the games over the course of a few hours.
It seems to me (from what I've seen) the full wireless transfer is safe. I and my friends that have done the transfer that way had all data transferred.
I lost all of my digital save data doing it wirelessly w/o a PC.
I don't have a personal computer at home and all the PCs at my work do not have SD card readers on them.
I got my New 3DS XL during a giant snowstorm here on the east coast so I was stranded at home all weekend and couldn't get to a friend's PC.
I thought I would try the wireless system transfer but unfortunately I've now lost all my save data.
There are reports of many people who have successfully made this transfer happen but I was not one of the lucky ones.
But I've also read reports from other gamers who have lost everything as I did, so it does happen.
It's a gamble. Be prepared to take the risk and just KNOW that your 3DS has the potential to lose everything too. Not saying it will, you just have to know going into it that it could happen.
FYI - I watched several videos online about how to do this transfer process prior to actually trying it. I even printed out NintendoLife's extremely convoluted article about how to make the transfer and took it home and read that before doing the transfer process. I followed every step to a tee and it still failed. The first attempt at transferring resulted in 14 hours of nothing happening only to realize the process had locked up.
After the failed transfer I noticed my cartridge save data was still intact (thankfully saves to the cart) and my Street Pass and Mii Plaza data were still intact. My old 3ds photos never transferred and still can only be viewed on my old 3ds. And, as I said, all my Save States and digital save data have completely vanished.

You may have done the LIMITED wireless transfer, which doesn't transfer everything.
Even though I don't think it'll happen, I have a back up plan for if my data is lost. While I would lose my Denpa Men data, the only other game I downloaded is Pokemon Y, so I could just put my Pokemon on the Pokemon Bank app before transferring, then if my data is lost, simply redownload Pokebank on my now-transferred NNID, and my Pokemon will be safe

Oh, is that it? I wouldn't sweat that.
For the record, I lost save data for over 80+ digital titles.

What transfer did you do, if you remember? Limited wireless or Full wireless (the one that takes hours to finish)?

To be honest, I don't remember ever having this option. I don't know. Sorry.
Limited wireless would still transfer your save data over, just not the actual games.
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.
Now playing:
Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)
My Activity Log is still intact (it knows I played Donkey Kong Country Returns for a certain # of hours but no save data to be found)
My street passes and Mii Plaza activity
My 3DS Home Themes
My NNID was transferred successfully
Things not carried over to my New 3DS XL:
Save Data for over 80+ digital downloaded titles
My pictures/snapshots. They can only be viewed using my old 3DS
And so far all my cart data is intact because it saves to the actual cartridge. (Thank goodness for this)
Glad most of my games are physical! It sounds like a limited transfer or something. Maybe the data couldn't fit on your sd card? All the wireless transfer stories I've heard have transferred every bit of data.
It should all fit. I bought a 32GB microSDHC card for my new 3ds. My old 3ds had an 8GB SD card.
Then that must have been the problem. You're suppose to use the same card for the new 3DS instead of the new one. That's why the systems advice you to use the same card after the transfer is complete if you did the wireless transfer.
If you do the wireless transfer, it's supposed to send all data to the new card. The reason is that you can no longer use the regular sized SD cards, making your suggestion impossible
Current games: Everything on Switch
Switch Friend Code: SW-5075-7879-0008 | My Nintendo: LzWinky | Nintendo Network ID: LzWinky

According to NintendoLife's article, all one needs is "A micro-SDHC card with at least the same capacity as your current SD card."
If I used the same card, as you suggest, well....that just won't work because it's an SD card and not micro.
I had exactly the same issues as berzerker99 using the wireless only method of transfer - I too lost lots of data (including 100% completion of Animal Crossing and all my Picross Exx puzzles data) .Hours and hours of progress lost.
You really don't know exactly what is or isn't transferred upon completion. It's bizarre that certain data is kept (like Streetpass hits etc. but not the streetpass progess data).
The transfer method is not completely foolproof - there is no obvious reason for it failing. And it's not about paying attention or not following instructions. The whole transfer process is flawed. If it wasn't there wouldn't be so many posts about it failing. It's only a small minority in the grand scheme of things, but if it affects you it's incredibly frustrating.
Knowing what I know now, I would have backed up my original 3DS SD card, or just used my pc to copy everything over to my microSD.
